What is Save/Load Context Plugin?

The save-load plugin is a vital addition to your suite of Openclaw Skills, designed to eliminate the ephemerality of AI interactions. By providing dedicated slash commands to save and load state, it allows developers and power users to preserve complex multi-turn discussions, architectural planning, or coding sessions that would otherwise be lost upon a session reset.

This skill ensures that your AI agent maintains continuity, allowing you to pick up exactly where you left off without re-explaining context or objectives. It functions by bridging the gap between ephemeral memory and persistent local storage, making it an essential tool for long-term project management within the AI ecosystem.

Save/Load Context Plugin Use Cases

  • Save long-form project architectural discussions for later reference.
  • Restore complex debugging sessions across different terminal instances.
  • Manage multiple distinct AI workflows by labeling saved contexts.
  • Archive important AI interactions as local JSON files for auditing or documentation.
  • Shift conversation contexts between different environments using the local file system.

How Save/Load Context Plugin Works

  1. Invoke the /save command to trigger the plugin to read the current session transcript in JSONL format.
  2. The plugin filters the history to extract only relevant user and assistant messages, excluding ephemeral tool calls and system logs.
  3. A structured JSON file is written to the local storage directory (~/.openclaw/saves/) with a unique timestamp and optional label.
  4. When reloading, the /load command populates the session transcript with the saved history.
  5. A system event is enqueued to notify the agent of the restored context, ensuring a seamless transition and full awareness of the loaded data through the read tool.

Save/Load Context Plugin Setup

Installation via CLI

To add this to your collection of Openclaw Skills, run the following command:

openclaw plugins install save-load

Manual Installation

  1. Copy the plugin directory to ~/.openclaw/extensions/save-load/.
  2. Verify the presence of openclaw.plugin.json and package.json.
  3. Enable the plugin by adding "save-load" to the plugins.enabled array in your ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json configuration file.
  4. Restart the gateway to apply changes:
openclaw gateway restart

Save/Load Context Plugin Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages data within the ~/.openclaw/saves/ directory, using a structured JSON format and an index.json for rapid metadata tracking.

Property Type Description
version Integer Schema version identifier for compatibility
label String User-defined name for the save file
savedAt ISO8601 Precise timestamp of the save event
messageCount Integer Total number of user and assistant pairs preserved
messages Array The actual content and roles of the conversation context

Save/Load Context Plugin Advanced Features

  • Automatic message filtering to ensure clean context restoration without redundant or broken tool call logs.
  • Seamless system event injection via enqueueSystemEvent for agent-level awareness of loaded history.
  • Support for index-based loading or label-based loading for fast CLI interaction.
  • Integrated deletion management to prune old Openclaw Skills session data directly from the terminal interface.
  • JSON-based storage architecture allows for easy manual editing or external script integration.
