What is Semgrep?

Semgrep is a high-performance static analysis tool designed to identify bugs, enforce coding standards, and prevent security vulnerabilities. By integrating this skill, AI agents can programmatically interact with Semgrep data to maintain high code quality and security posture across multiple repositories. As part of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, it leverages the Membrane framework to provide a seamless interface for automated code reviews and vulnerability management.

This integration allows developers and security engineers to offload the heavy lifting of security auditing to an AI agent. Whether you are running individual file scans or managing complex deployment policies, Openclaw Skills provide the necessary tooling to bridge the gap between static analysis results and actionable development tasks.

Semgrep Use Cases

  • Automating security code reviews within CI/CD pipelines or IDEs.
  • Triaging high volumes of SAST and SCA findings across large organizations.
  • Managing and updating security policies and rules across multiple projects.
  • Monitoring repository health by listing dependencies and detected secrets.
  • Tagging and organizing projects for better reporting and compliance.

How Semgrep Works

  1. The AI agent utilizes the Membrane CLI to authenticate and establish a secure connection to Semgrep.
  2. Openclaw Skills identify the required intent, such as scanning a repository or listing findings, through natural language discovery.
  3. The skill executes specific actions via the Membrane runtime, which handles all authentication headers and credential refreshes.
  4. Results are returned in machine-readable JSON format, allowing the agent to analyze vulnerabilities or update project configurations.
  5. For custom requirements, the agent can use proxy requests to hit any Semgrep API endpoint directly while maintaining secure auth.

Semgrep Setup

To start using this skill within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, first install the Membrane CLI:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest

Next, authenticate your agent (replace <agentType> with openclaw, claude, etc.):

membrane login --tenant --clientName=<agentType>

Finally, establish a connection to your Semgrep instance:

membrane connection ensure "https://semgrep.dev/" --json

Semgrep Data Schema & Taxonomy

The Semgrep skill organizes data around deployments, projects, and findings. Below is the primary metadata taxonomy:

Object Description
Scan Details of a specific analysis including repository and commit info.
Finding Specific code (SAST) or supply chain (SCA) vulnerabilities identified.
Project The container for scans and findings associated with a specific repo.
Policy Sets of rules that govern how code is evaluated and triaged.
Deployment The top-level organization or account context for the Semgrep instance.

Semgrep Advanced Features

  • Natural Language Action Discovery: Find specific functions by describing your intent to the CLI.
  • Automated Credential Lifecycle: No manual token management; Membrane handles OAuth and API key refreshes server-side.
  • Transparent Proxy: Full API coverage allowing raw requests to the Semgrep API with automatic header injection.
  • Multi-Agent Support: Optimized tooling for various agent types including openclaw, warp, and windsurf.
  • Long-polling Scans: Built-in wait mechanisms for asynchronous scan results and connection building.
