What is Sensor?

Sensor is a robust, offline-first command-line toolkit designed for developers and engineers who need to manage telemetry data without relying on complex cloud infrastructures. As a featured part of Openclaw Skills, it provides a structured way to log readings, verify device connectivity, and perform data transformations directly from the terminal.

The tool prioritizes data sovereignty and speed, ensuring that all telemetry logs and device configurations remain on your local machine. By utilizing standard Unix utilities, it offers a lightweight yet powerful environment for handling everything from single temperature readings to complex batch processing of multi-device datasets.

Sensor Use Cases

  • Logging field readings for temperature, humidity, or pressure with automatic timestamping.
  • Analyzing telemetry trends to identify anomalies or drift in industrial or home automation setups.
  • Converting sensor units and data formats while maintaining a historical record of all transformations.
  • Generating structured reports and exporting data for external dashboarding or stakeholder reviews.
  • Monitoring device connectivity and health status across distributed IoT networks.

How Sensor Works

  1. The user executes a specific sensor command followed by an input string containing the telemetry data.
  2. The utility captures the input and appends it with a high-precision timestamp to a command-specific log file (e.g., run.log or check.log).
  3. Simultaneously, the activity is mirrored in a master history.log file to maintain a unified audit trail.
  4. If called without arguments, the tool retrieves and displays the 20 most recent entries for that specific command category.
  5. Users can then perform aggregate operations like searching, calculating statistics, or exporting the entire local database into portable formats.

Sensor Setup

To integrate this tool into your Openclaw Skills workflow, ensure you have a standard Bash environment. Install by placing the script in your PATH and initializing the data directory:

# The tool defaults to ~/.local/share/sensor/
# To customize the storage location, set the SENSOR_DIR variable
export SENSOR_DIR="/your/custom/path"

# Verify installation
sensor status

Sensor Data Schema & Taxonomy

Sensor organizes data using a flat-file structure for maximum portability and speed. Each functional area has its own dedicated log:

Log File Purpose
run.log Primary sensor task readings
check.log Device connectivity and health checks
analyze.log Telemetry trend analysis and pattern logs
config.log Device and environment configuration settings
history.log Unified global activity audit trail
export.* Generated output in JSON, CSV, or TXT formats

Sensor Advanced Features

  • Local-first architecture ensuring zero network latency and total data privacy.
  • Dual-mode command execution for both data entry and rapid historical retrieval.
  • Multi-format export engine supporting JSON and CSV for seamless integration with Data Analytics tools.
  • Global search functionality across all command logs to trace specific device IDs or events.
  • Comprehensive health checks providing disk usage, entry counts, and versioning data.
