What is ShiftLeft?

ShiftLeft is a premier static code analysis platform designed to help developers identify and remediate security vulnerabilities before code hits production. It serves security teams and developers by automating testing and improving overall code quality.

By utilizing Openclaw Skills, developers can bridge the gap between their AI agents and security workflows, enabling automated scanning of pull requests, branches, and findings. This integration simplifies complex security operations into actionable agent workflows, ensuring code quality and safety are maintained throughout the development lifecycle without the overhead of manual credential management.

ShiftLeft Use Cases

  • Automated security scanning of new Pull Requests during the CI/CD process.
  • Fetching and summarizing security findings for developers to prioritize fixes.
  • Triggering scans across multiple projects and branches programmatically.
  • Managing security policies and organizational users through AI-driven commands.
  • Integrating security data into custom DevOps dashboards using Openclaw Skills.

How ShiftLeft Works

  1. The AI agent initializes the connection using the Membrane CLI framework.
  2. Authentication is handled server-side via Membrane, ensuring no local secrets are required.
  3. The agent utilizes natural language intent to search for specific ShiftLeft actions, such as listing findings or projects.
  4. Commands are executed via the Openclaw Skills interface to perform scans or retrieve technical metadata.
  5. Structured results are returned to the agent, allowing for automated reporting or immediate code remediation steps.

ShiftLeft Setup

To get started with this integration, first install the Membrane CLI:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest

Next, authenticate your environment:

membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Finally, create a secure connection to the ShiftLeft instance:

membrane connection ensure "https://www.shiftleft.io" --json

Verify that the connection state is READY before attempting to run actions or proxy requests.

ShiftLeft Data Schema & Taxonomy

The ShiftLeft skill organizes data through several core entities to facilitate comprehensive security analysis. Openclaw Skills allow you to query these entities directly:

Entity Description
Organizations Top-level containers for users and projects.
Projects The primary unit of organization for source code repositories.
Findings Specific security vulnerabilities and code issues detected during scans.
Scans Detailed history and status of static analysis executions.
Policies Rulesets governing security standards and compliance requirements.

ShiftLeft Advanced Features

  • Transparent credential refresh management via Membrane's secure server-side proxy.
  • Natural language action discovery to dynamically map user requests to ShiftLeft API calls.
  • Direct proxy support for custom API endpoints using Openclaw Skills for advanced integration logic.
  • Long-polling support for asynchronous scan completion monitoring.
  • Machine-readable JSON output for all actions to support multi-agent orchestration.
