What is Sigma?

Sigma is a leading cloud-native analytics platform designed for deep data exploration and visualization directly within cloud data warehouses. This Openclaw Skills integration allows developers and AI agents to programmatically interact with Sigma workbooks, sheets, and connections without manual credential management.

By leveraging the Membrane framework, this skill provides a secure layer for performing ad-hoc analysis and building interactive dashboards. It simplifies complex API interactions into executable actions, ensuring that business analysts and data scientists can automate their insights-driven workflows with high efficiency and minimal boilerplate code.

Sigma Use Cases

  • Automating the export of data from Sigma workbooks into external reporting tools.
  • Programmatically managing Sigma connections and templates within a DevOps pipeline.
  • enabling AI agents to perform real-time data exploration and visualization tasks using Openclaw Skills.
  • Refreshing dashboard data or triggering sheet updates based on external events.
  • Executing custom API requests through a secure proxy while maintaining automatic authentication.

How Sigma Works

  1. Installation: The user installs the Membrane CLI to provide the interface for Openclaw Skills to communicate with Sigma.
  2. Authentication: A secure connection is established using a tenant-based login, where Membrane handles the OAuth handshake and token lifecycle.
  3. Connection Management: The skill ensures a connection exists for the specific Sigma domain and waits for a READY state.
  4. Action Discovery: The agent searches for specific functional intents (e.g., "list workbooks") using natural language queries to find pre-built actions.
  5. Execution: Actions are executed with JSON parameters, or raw API calls are routed through the Membrane proxy with injected headers.

Sigma Setup

First, install the global CLI required for Openclaw Skills integration:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest

Next, authenticate your agent (replace <agentType> with openclaw):

membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Create and verify the Sigma connection:

membrane connection ensure "https://www.sigmacomputing.com/" --json

Sigma Data Schema & Taxonomy

The Sigma skill organizes data around the core Sigma hierarchy and utilizes the following metadata taxonomy:

Entity Description
Workbook The top-level container for analytics projects.
Sheet Individual data tabs or dashboards within a workbook.
Cell Specific data points or functional units within a sheet.
Connection The underlying data source link (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery).
Action ID Unique identifier for pre-defined operations like list-workbooks.

All results are returned in structured JSON format when the --json flag is utilized.

Sigma Advanced Features

  • Automatic Credential Refresh: Transparently handles expired tokens without agent intervention.
  • Natural Language Intent Search: Dynamically discover API capabilities using the action list --intent command.
  • Headless Authentication Support: Facilitates setup in remote or CI/CD environments via authorization URLs.
  • Direct Proxy Requests: Perform custom API operations using membrane request while retaining built-in security and base URL mapping.
  • Long-polling Status Checks: Use the --wait flag to synchronize asynchronous connection building processes.
