What is A3 Report Generator?

A3 Report Generator guides users through a structured improvement interview that turns a vague issue into a complete A3 report, collecting the problem context, current-state metrics, SMART targets, root-cause analysis, countermeasures, timelines, and verification in one flow.

It enforces completeness and logic at each step, so Openclaw Skills can produce a browser-editable HTML report that is standardized, printable, and ready to share. The template-driven workflow is backed by Jinja2 and the prebuilt scripts/ assets, making the output fast to generate and consistent across reports.

A3 Report Generator Use Cases

  • You need to write an A3 improvement report for a production incident, downtime event, defect spike, or process breakdown.
  • You have a vague problem statement and need guided follow-up questions to capture STAR details and quantify the impact.
  • You want to analyze current-state data, confirm source and time range, and align the pain point with observable metrics.
  • You need a SMART target that is measurable, time-bound, and clearly better than the baseline.
  • You are performing 5Why root-cause analysis and need a stopping rule that ends only when the cause is actionable.
  • You need to map each root cause to a countermeasure, owner, due date, and milestone plan.
  • You want a self-contained HTML report that can be edited in a browser, printed, or shared as a final artifact.

How A3 Report Generator Works

  1. Capture the problem statement in STAR format and ask follow-up questions until Situation, Task, Action, and Result are all present.
  2. Collect the current-state baseline, including KPI values, time range, data source, and any charts or trends that support the issue.
  3. Convert the baseline into a SMART goal that is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
  4. Run iterative 5Why analysis until the cause chain reaches an actionable root cause that can be directly addressed.
  5. Translate each validated root cause into one or more countermeasures, with a clear owner and expected completion date.
  6. Break execution into milestones and checkpoints so the action plan can be validated against the target date.
  7. Compare before/after results, confirm the uplift, and capture standardization outputs such as SOPs, checklists, or training materials.
  8. Render the structured data through the Jinja2 template to generate a polished, editable HTML A3 report.

A3 Report Generator Setup

  • Ensure Python is available in your environment.
  • Install Jinja2 if it is not already installed:
pip install jinja2
  • Confirm the skill assets exist under scripts/ and references/.
  • Run the generator with your structured inputs:
python scripts/generate_a3.py --problem "..." --current_state "..." --goal "..." --root_cause "..." --actions "..." --timeline "..." --verification "..." --meta "Department/Date/Owner" --output "./output/a3_report.html"
  • Open the generated HTML file in a browser to review, edit, print, or share.
  • If you are working in an Openclaw Skills workflow, keep the references/a3-standard.md guidance nearby for STAR, SMART, and 5Why validation.

A3 Report Generator Data Schema & Taxonomy

Openclaw Skills organizes the report as a validation-first dataset that mirrors the A3 lifecycle.

Layer Primary fields Purpose Validation rule
Frontmatter name, slug, displayName, description, version, category, author Skill identity and catalog metadata Must exist in the SKILL definition
Problem definition STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result Capture the issue clearly All four elements required; Result should be quantified
Current state KPI values, ratios, trend window, source, charts Establish the baseline Must include a source and a time range
Goal setting SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound Define the target state Target must improve on the baseline and have a deadline
Root cause Why1, Why2, Why3, Why4, Why5+ Build a cause chain At least 4 layers; final cause must be actionable
Countermeasures cause-to-action mapping, owner, due date Assign fixes to causes Each root cause needs a matching action
Action plan milestones, checkpoints, phase order, optional Gantt inputs Schedule delivery Milestones must be verifiable and finish before the target date
Verification before/after values, uplift, standardization notes Prove impact and lock in the fix Before/after comparison required

Generated artifact

  • output/a3_report.html: self-contained editable HTML with styles and scripts embedded.
  • Rendering is driven by scripts/generate_a3.py and the prebuilt Jinja2 template in scripts/.

Metadata taxonomy

  • Identity: skill name, slug, display name, version, author
  • Analysis: problem, current_state, goal, root_cause, actions
  • Execution: timeline, verification, meta (department/date/owner)

A3 Report Generator Advanced Features

  • Guided multi-step interview flow with automatic follow-up prompts when data is vague or incomplete.
  • Hard validation gates after every module; missing structure sends the user back for correction instead of generating a weak report.
  • Iterative 5Why analysis with a minimum depth requirement and a clear stopping rule when the root cause becomes actionable.
  • Optional multi-dimensional analysis across person, machine, material, method, environment, and measurement factors.
  • Root-cause-to-countermeasure mapping that keeps every cause tied to an owner and due date.
  • Self-contained HTML output that supports browser editing, printing, and easy sharing.
  • Template-driven rendering through Jinja2, making Openclaw Skills consistent and easy to extend.
  • Built-in standardization prompts that help turn improvements into SOPs, checklists, and training materials.
