What is Skill Manage?

Skill Manage is a foundational utility designed to streamline the lifecycle of extensions within the Openclaw ecosystem. It serves as a centralized hub for developers and power users to maintain their AI agent's capabilities by scanning local directories and identifying installed skills across various sources including GitHub and SkillHub.

By providing a standardized way to handle updates and removals, this toolkit ensures that your environment remains clean and your Openclaw Skills are always running on the latest versions. It bridges the gap between manual file management and automated package control, making it an essential component for anyone building or using AI-driven workflows.

Skill Manage Use Cases

  • Scanning local workspace directories to list all active Openclaw Skills and their current versions.
  • Performing dry-run checks to identify available updates from remote repositories or SkillHub.
  • Automating the update process for GitHub-based skills via integrated git pull commands.
  • Safely uninstalling outdated or unused skills with optional confirmation prompts.
  • Managing system-level and user-level skills from a single command-line interface.

How Skill Manage Works

  1. The toolkit initiates a scan of the local filesystem, specifically targeting the .qclaw/workspace/skills and .qclaw/skills directories.
  2. It analyzes the contents of each skill folder to determine its source (GitHub, SkillHub, Config, or Local) based on the presence of specific metadata files like .git or _meta.json.
  3. Upon user request, it compares local versions against remote sources to identify potential upgrades.
  4. When an update or uninstallation is triggered, the skill executes the appropriate backend logic, such as performing a git pull for GitHub sources or invoking the skillhub installer for SkillHub sources.
  5. It returns a detailed status report to the user, confirming the success of the management operation.

Skill Manage Setup

To get started with this toolkit, ensure you have python3 installed on your system. You can then use the following commands to manage your Openclaw Skills:

# List all installed skills
python scripts/skill_manage.py list

# Check for available updates
python scripts/skill_manage.py check

Skill Manage Data Schema & Taxonomy

Skill Manage categorizes and tracks Openclaw Skills using a clear taxonomy based on directory structure and metadata files:

Source Detection Logic Update Mechanism
GitHub Presence of a .git directory Executes git pull
SkillHub Presence of a _meta.json file Executes skillhub install <slug>
Config Presence of a config.json file Updated via core system updates
Local All other directories Manual updates required

Skill Manage Advanced Features

  • Auto-detection of skill sources for seamless one-click upgrades.
  • Support for voice commands to list, check, and update Openclaw Skills via natural language.
  • Force-uninstall flag (-y) to bypass confirmation prompts for automated cleanup scripts.
  • Detailed metadata reporting including versioning, author info, and local file paths.
  • Multi-source support allowing users to mix local development skills with community-contributed ones.
