What is Skill Sandbox?

Skill Sandbox provides a robust security layer for managing Openclaw Skills. It acts as a gatekeeper, ensuring that any new skill downloaded from ClawHub is thoroughly vetted before being integrated into your production environment. By isolating installations in a staging area, the skill prevents potential supply chain attacks and accidental execution of malicious code.

The system utilizes a five-layer automated scanning process that evaluates file integrity, code patterns, and dangerous directives within the skill documentation. This makes it an essential tool for developers and organizations who prioritize security when expanding their AI agent capabilities with Openclaw Skills.

Skill Sandbox Use Cases

  • Installing new skills from ClawHub with automated security verification.
  • Auditing existing Openclaw Skills to identify potential security vulnerabilities or risky code patterns.
  • Promoting quarantined skills to production after manual review or deep LLM-powered audits.
  • Integrating security scanning into CI/CD pipelines for agent-based development environments.

How Skill Sandbox Works

  1. The skill is initially installed into a dedicated staging directory, keeping it isolated from live Openclaw Skills.
  2. A multi-layer automated scan is triggered, analyzing file inventory, code patterns (like eval or network calls), and dependency risks.
  3. The system reviews the SKILL.md file for dangerous agent instructions or directives that could compromise the host system.
  4. Based on the findings, the skill is either auto-promoted to the live directory, flagged for manual review, or quarantined for a deep audit.

Skill Sandbox Setup

To get started with Skill Sandbox, ensure you have the script available in your base directory. You can install or audit Openclaw Skills using the following commands:

# Standard installation with auto-promotion
bash ./scripts/skill-sandbox.sh <skill-name>

# Audit a skill without moving it to live
bash ./scripts/skill-sandbox.sh <skill-name> --scan-only

# Manually promote a skill after review
bash ./scripts/skill-sandbox.sh <skill-name> --promote

Skill Sandbox Data Schema & Taxonomy

Skill Sandbox organizes data by separating staged and quarantined items from active skills. Below is the directory and metadata structure:

Path Description
skills/_staging/ Temporary quarantine area for new or flagged Openclaw Skills.
skills/<skill>/ Final destination for promoted and verified skills.
scripts/skill-sandbox.sh The core execution logic for scanning and promotion.

All scan patterns are executed via static regex, ensuring no external network calls are made during the verification process.

Skill Sandbox Advanced Features

  • Multi-layer static analysis covering code, dependencies, and agent-specific instructions.
  • Support for version-specific installations to ensure compatibility and security across different releases.
  • Integration capabilities with external security auditor agents for deep, LLM-powered audits of flagged Openclaw Skills.
  • CLI-based quarantine management, allowing users to list, re-scan, or force-install skills when necessary.
