What is Instapaper Import?

Instapaper Import is a powerful bridge between your reading workflow and your knowledge management system. Designed for the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, this tool specifically addresses the need to separate what an author said from what you think about it. It processes Markdown-formatted exports from Instapaper, intelligently distinguishing between original article highlights and your own insights.

By automating the tedious task of manual entry, this skill allows researchers, writers, and students to maintain a high-velocity Zettelkasten. It ensures that every note imported is mapped back to its source article title and URL, preserving the context of your learning without cluttering your digital garden with raw quotes.

Instapaper Import Use Cases

  • Transferring personal reflections from articles into a permanent digital slipbox.
  • Cleaning up Instapaper exports by filtering out source text to focus on original ideas.
  • Batch processing reading notes after a deep-dive research session.
  • Maintaining a structured bibliography of articles through automated source metadata tagging.

How Instapaper Import Works

  1. The user inputs a Markdown export from Instapaper which includes the article title, URL, and mixed text lines.
  2. The skill parses the header to identify the source article title and the associated URL.
  3. It applies a filtering logic that skips any lines starting with the blockquote symbol (>), identifying these as original highlights.
  4. Plain text paragraphs following highlights are extracted as unique user notes.
  5. The skill provides a pre-import summary for confirmation, detailing the article source and the number of notes found.
  6. On confirmation, it triggers the slipbot for each note, automatically assigning the correct metadata, source type, and link updates.

Instapaper Import Setup

To start using this feature within your Openclaw Skills environment, ensure your slipbot utility is properly configured to receive external note inputs. Simply copy your highlight export from Instapaper and paste it into the agent interface. The skill will automatically detect the format and begin the parsing workflow. For CLI-based interactions, ensure your environment variables for the slipbox directory are set as follows:

export SLIPBOX_PATH="/path/to/your/notes"
# Paste the Markdown content when prompted by the agent
