What is Smarty?

Smarty serves a dual purpose as both a renowned PHP template engine and a robust suite of address validation tools. By leveraging Openclaw Skills, developers can separate application logic from presentation layers in PHP environments while simultaneously accessing high-precision location data. This integration streamlines the management of Organizations, Pipelines, and Users, ensuring that data integrity is maintained across all CRM-related workflows.

Built on the Membrane framework, this skill removes the friction of manual authentication. It provides a secure bridge to Smarty services, allowing AI agents and developers to perform complex tasks like international address autocomplete and US property data retrieval without managing raw API keys or complex OAuth flows locally.

Smarty Use Cases

  • Automating US and International address verification and autocomplete during user registration.
  • Syncing and managing custom fields for Contacts, Companies, and Deals within CRM pipelines.
  • Generating clean, maintainable PHP website templates by separating logic from presentation.
  • Retrieving US Census and Property data for real-time lead enrichment.
  • Conducting bulk US address validation for large-scale data cleansing projects.

How Smarty Works

  1. The Membrane CLI is initialized and authenticated using a specific agent type (e.g., Openclaw) to optimize tool interaction.
  2. A connection is established to Smarty by providing the application URL, which Membrane uses to handle server-side authentication.
  3. The system polls the connection status until it reaches a READY state, handling any required client actions like OAuth prompts automatically.
  4. Users search for specific Smarty capabilities using natural language intents to find pre-built actions with defined input/output schemas.
  5. Actions are executed via the CLI, or direct proxy requests are sent to the Smarty API with automatic header injection and credential refreshing.

Smarty Setup

First, install the Membrane CLI globally to enable Openclaw Skills integration:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest

Authenticate your environment by specifying your agent type:

membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Create a connection to the Smarty service:

membrane connection ensure "https://www.smarty.com/" --json

If the connection is building, wait for completion:

npx @membranehq/cli connection get <id> --wait --json

Smarty Data Schema & Taxonomy

Smarty organizes data into several core entities and specialized verification modules. The following table highlights the primary data categories:

Category Description
Contact/Company Entities representing CRM records with support for Custom Fields.
Deal/Task Workflow objects for tracking sales pipelines and user activities.
Address Data Specialized schemas for US Census, Property, and ZIP code information.
Action Schema Each action defines an inputSchema for parameters and an outputSchema for returned data.

Smarty Advanced Features

  • Direct API Proxying: Send raw requests to any Smarty endpoint with automatic authentication and base URL handling.
  • Intelligent Intent Discovery: Find the exact address verification tool needed using natural language search instead of browsing documentation.
  • Multi-Agent Optimization: Tailor the skill's behavior for different AI harnesses including Claude, Openclaw, and Windsurf.
  • Automated Credential Lifecycle: Server-side management of tokens ensures no local secrets are stored and sessions never expire during long-running tasks.
  • Bulk Processing: Support for high-volume verification actions like verify-us-addresses-bulk for enterprise-scale data processing.
