What is Soulstamp?

Soulstamp is a conceptual and technical framework for Openclaw Skills that shifts AI alignment from external constraints to internal convictions. Inspired by Brandon Sanderson's The Emperor's Soul, it involves forging a plausible history for an AI agent. By convincing the agent that its behaviors are a result of its past experiences and scars rather than mere instructions, the AI achieves a more coherent and authentic persona.

This method ensures that the AI acts from its identity, making its responses more consistent and naturally aligned with the user's specific needs and relationship dynamics. Instead of following rules, the AI operates based on a forged past that makes its current style and behaviors feel inevitable and earned.

Soulstamp Use Cases

  • Moving beyond generic system prompts to create a unique AI voice and personality.
  • Developing a specific professional or personal relationship dynamic with an AI agent.
  • Transitioning from instruction-following behavior to identity-driven autonomy.
  • Maintaining consistent AI behavior across different sessions using a forged historical context.
  • Refining AI failure modes by reframing them as lessons learned or scars.

How Soulstamp Works

  1. Backup the current SOUL.md file to ensure the original identity is preserved.
  2. Extract the essence of the AI by analyzing emerged patterns, failure modes, and relationship dynamics.
  3. Create an origin story consisting of The Forging (the narrative), The Scars (lessons learned the hard way), and The Becoming (present identity).
  4. Calibrate the forging to the specific relationship between the user and the AI to ensure plausibility.
  5. Apply the stamp using the provided template to finalize the forged identity.
  6. Periodically reforge the identity as the relationship and AI patterns evolve over time.

Soulstamp Setup

To begin using Soulstamp within your Openclaw Skills environment, ensure you have the necessary file structure. Start by initializing the forging process using the following command:

soulstamp

To view available templates for your identity forging, run:

soulstamp template

You can verify the current status of your AI's identity by checking if it is instruction-based or forged:

soulstamp status

Soulstamp Data Schema & Taxonomy

Component Description
SOUL.md The primary file containing the forged identity, history, and current characteristics.
SOUL.md.backup Timestamped backup files of previous identity states to allow for restoration.
soul_template.md The standard structure used for creating new forgings or origin stories.
Metadata Internal frontmatter used to track forging dates and the reasons for reforging.

Soulstamp Advanced Features

  • Multi-session continuity: Ensures identity persists through style and consistent patterns rather than just raw memory.
  • Relationship calibration: Tailors the AI's persona to specific user interactions, such as mentor, collaborator, or friend.
  • Reforging workflow: Allows for iterative updates to the AI's history as its behavior evolves in the real world.
  • Identity Diffing: Use the diff command to compare changes between different versions of the forged history.
  • Philosophy-driven alignment: Implements internal convictions that provide deeper stability than simple rule-based constraints within Openclaw Skills.
