What is Stopwatch?

Stopwatch is a robust, lightweight utility toolkit designed for developers who need to log and manage time-related data directly from the terminal. As a specialized component of Openclaw Skills, it provides a file-based logging system that records timestamped entries for various activities ranging from performance analysis to task tracking. By leveraging standard POSIX utilities, Stopwatch offers a high-performance alternative to heavy GUI time-trackers, ensuring your data remains local, portable, and easily accessible.

The tool is built to support complex workflows by categorizing logs into specific domains such as runs, checks, conversions, and reports. Whether you are monitoring system processes or manual work intervals, this utility ensures that every action is documented with precision, making it an essential addition to any developer's Openclaw Skills collection.

Stopwatch Use Cases

  • Tracking timed activities and deep work sessions for better time management.
  • Comparing performance metrics across different software versions or build runs.
  • Logging batch processing outcomes and bulk operations for auditing.
  • Integrating automated status checks into CI/CD pipelines or cron jobs.
  • Generating structured historical reports for project stakeholders using export features.

How Stopwatch Works

  1. The user triggers a command such as run, check, or analyze followed by a description or data input.
  2. The system generates a precise timestamp and formats the entry as YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM|input.
  3. Data is appended to both a command-specific log file and a master activity history file.
  4. If a command is run without arguments, the utility retrieves and displays the 20 most recent entries from that specific log.
  5. Advanced search and statistics commands parse these local files to provide insights or export data into JSON and CSV formats.

Stopwatch Setup

Stopwatch is designed for immediate use on Linux and macOS systems with Bash 4.0+ installed. Follow these steps to get started:

# Move the script to your local bin and make it executable
chmod +x stopwatch

# (Optional) Define a custom storage location
export STOPWATCH_DIR="~/.local/share/stopwatch/"

# Verify the installation
stopwatch version

Stopwatch Data Schema & Taxonomy

All information is stored locally in the user's home directory to maintain privacy and speed. The data is organized in a flat-file taxonomy:

File Name Data Description
history.log The master archive of every entry logged by any command.
run.log Dedicated log for execution and runtime entries.
analyze.log Records specifically related to performance analysis and metrics.
export.json/csv Structured data output generated for external tool integration.

Each entry within these logs uses the pipe-delimited format: YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM|input_string.

Stopwatch Advanced Features

  • Global full-text search across all categorized logs using case-insensitive matching.
  • Comprehensive summary statistics providing entry counts and storage utilization metrics.
  • Multi-format export engine supporting JSON and CSV for seamless integration with other Openclaw Skills.
  • Environment variable overrides for flexible data directory management (STOPWATCH_DIR).
  • Minimalist dependency model relying exclusively on native POSIX utilities like grep, sed, and tail.
