What is surf-check?

The surf-check skill is a specialized forecast decision engine designed to help surfers identify optimal paddling conditions without the need for manual monitoring. By integrating directly with Surfline data, it evaluates wave height and quality ratings while accounting for forecast reliability based on the lead time. It serves as an intelligent bridge between raw maritime data and actionable AI-driven alerts.

As part of the wider ecosystem of Openclaw Skills, this tool allows users to set custom thresholds and receive natural language summaries of the surf. Whether you are tracking a local break like Belmar or monitoring multiple spots globally, this skill ensures you never miss a session due to forgotten forecast checks.

surf-check Use Cases

  • Automating surf condition monitoring for specific local breaks.
  • Receiving natural language summaries of upcoming surfable days.
  • Debugging forecast reliability to understand why specific days were filtered out.
  • Setting up automated notifications that only trigger when conditions meet a specific quality bar.

How surf-check Works

  1. The skill fetches forecast data for configured spot IDs using Surfline's API.
  2. It applies a decision matrix that weights quality ratings against the lead time (e.g., requiring higher confidence for forecasts 4+ days out).
  3. It filters results based on user-defined wave height minimums and maximums, typically between 2 and 6 feet.
  4. If conditions meet the specific thresholds, it generates a summary; otherwise, it suppresses output to reduce noise.
  5. It utilizes state tracking to ensure that a surfable window is only reported once, preventing redundant alerts in automated workflows.

surf-check Setup

Ensure you have Node.js and npx installed on your system. Navigate to the skill directory and install the necessary dependencies:

cd {baseDir} && npm install

To check current conditions immediately, use the standard check command:

npm run check

Optional: To customize your spots, create a ~/.surf-check.json file with your preferred Surfline spot IDs and wave height limits.

surf-check Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages its logic through configuration files and a state-tracking JSON object to ensure high-quality reporting.

Component Description
~/.surf-check.json User-defined configuration for spots, waveMin, and waveMax.
{baseDir}/data/state.json Persistent state file used to track which conditions have already been reported.
src/types.ts The core schema defining default thresholds and spot metadata.

surf-check Advanced Features

  • Cron integration support for automated checks every 6 hours via Openclaw Skills.
  • Debugging mode using npm run check:debug to see exactly why conditions did or did not qualify.
  • JSON output mode for users who need structured data for further processing.
  • State management allows for seamless integration into system events without duplicate notifications.
  • Support for custom spot identification using unique Surfline spot IDs.
