What is Task Quest?

Task Quest is an innovative Openclaw Skills extension designed to provide a zero-friction gamification layer for task management. It functions as a companion to smart-tasks, automatically tracking user progress without requiring manual input. By monitoring task completion through an AI agent, it injects motivational elements like experience points (XP), leveling systems, and performance streaks directly into the developer's workflow.

The skill is built on the philosophy of natural insertion; instead of cluttering the interface with separate notifications, game progress is appended to existing agent responses. This ensures that users remain focused on their work while receiving subtle, rewarding feedback that encourages consistency and high-performance habits.

Task Quest Use Cases

  • Users seeking increased motivation and engagement for daily task management.
  • Developers wanting to track productivity streaks and reach career-like milestones within their IDE.
  • Teams or individuals who enjoy RPG-style progression applied to real-world technical debt and project milestones.
  • Automated reporting of weekly productivity gains through gamified metrics.

How Task Quest Works

  1. The agent initializes the session by reading the current state from quest-state.md and cross-referencing it with active tasks.
  2. When a task is marked as complete, the skill calculates XP based on priority, estimated hours, and timing bonuses.
  3. The quest-state.md file is updated in real-time, incrementing total XP, updating streaks, and checking for level-up conditions.
  4. The system evaluates achievement conditions (speed, consistency, or category-based) and updates achievements.md if new goals are met.
  5. Success metrics are seamlessly integrated as a single-line update at the end of the agent's natural response.
  6. Periodic history logging archives progress into quarterly files for long-term productivity analytics.

Task Quest Setup

To integrate this skill into your environment, run the initialization script provided in the Openclaw Skills directory:

bash skills/task-quest/scripts/init-quest.sh

This command creates the necessary data structure, including quest-state.md and achievements.md. Following initialization, ensure you apply the workspace integration changes as specified in your reference documentation.

Task Quest Data Schema & Taxonomy

Task Quest organizes its data within a dedicated directory using Markdown and YAML for transparency and ease of access:

File Purpose Key Data Points
quest-state.md Core State Level, XP, current streak, theme, and total tasks completed.
achievements.md Milestone Tracking List of unlocked and pending achievements with timestamps.
history/YYYY-QN.md Archival Data Quarterly summaries of XP gains and weekly completion rates.
themes.md Visual Styling Configuration for RPG, Space, Academic, or Minimalist reporting styles.

Task Quest Advanced Features

  • Multi-theme support allowing users to switch between RPG, Space, and Minimalist personas for their progress reports.
  • Intelligent streak logic that resets to a fresh start without negative reinforcement if a day is missed.
  • Dynamic XP formulas that weigh task difficulty and urgency to reward high-impact work.
  • Automated quarterly history logging for deep-dive productivity audits.
  • Silent tracking mode that continues to record data even when active reporting is disabled.
