What is Timing?

The Timing skill for Openclaw Skills allows developers and AI agents to interface directly with the leading automatic time tracking application for macOS. By leveraging this skill, you can programmatically monitor how time is spent across various projects, tasks, and applications without manual entry. It bridges the gap between your desktop activity and automated workflows, making it an essential tool for freelancers and consultants who need precise data for billing and performance analysis.

Built on top of the Membrane protocol, this skill eliminates the complexity of OAuth and credential management. It provides a high-level interface to interact with Timing data, including timers, pomodoro sessions, and stopwatch functions, ensuring that your AI agent can manage time tracking records with minimal overhead and maximum security.

Timing Use Cases

  • Automating the creation of time entries based on project milestones or calendar events.
  • Generating daily or weekly productivity summaries for consultants and freelancers.
  • Synchronizing Timing session data with external invoicing or project management tools.
  • Reminding users to start or stop timers based on detected context or task completion.
  • Analyzing time allocation across different macOS applications to optimize deep work schedules.

How Timing Works

  1. The AI agent initializes the environment by installing the Membrane CLI to handle the communication layer.
  2. User authentication is performed via a secure browser-based flow, where Membrane creates a persistent connection to the Timing API.
  3. The agent uses natural language intent to search for specific actions, such as starting a timer or fetching session history.
  4. Actions are executed through the Openclaw Skills interface, passing required JSON parameters to the Timing backend.
  5. If a specific endpoint isn't covered by a pre-built action, the agent can use the proxy request feature to communicate directly with the Timing API while Membrane handles the authentication headers automatically.

Timing Setup

First, install the necessary CLI tool:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest

Authenticate your agent (replace <agentType> with openclaw):

membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Establish a connection to the Timing service:

membrane connection ensure "https://timingapp.com" --json

Timing Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes data around the Timing API entities. Metadata and session records are returned in structured JSON format for easy parsing by Openclaw Skills.

Entity Description
Timer Session Records of specific durations spent on a task.
Pomodoro Data related to focused work intervals and breaks.
Project The categorization hierarchy for different work streams.
Connection ID A unique identifier managed by Membrane for secure API access.
Action Schema Definition of inputs (e.g., project name) and outputs (e.g., session ID).

Timing Advanced Features

  • Intent-based action discovery: Search for capabilities using natural language instead of rigid API endpoints.
  • Transparent credential refresh: Never worry about expired tokens; the underlying protocol manages re-authentication.
  • Headless environment support: Easy login flows for remote servers or CI/CD pipelines.
  • Direct API Proxying: Execute raw HTTP requests to the Timing API with automatic header injection for custom requirements.
  • Multi-agent compatibility: Use the same connection across different AI frameworks by specifying the client name.
