What is TripIt Calendar?

The TripIt Calendar skill is a specialized tool designed to bring travel intelligence to AI agents. By leveraging the private iCal feed provided by TripIt, this skill allows Openclaw Skills to retrieve comprehensive data about upcoming trips, including flights, hotels, and ground transportation. It bridges the gap between static travel bookings and dynamic AI assistance, ensuring your personal assistant is always aware of your current and future travel context.

Built for reliability and precision, the skill avoids external web searches in favor of your actual confirmed bookings. It focuses on delivering the specific details you need—like flight times and hotel locations—directly from your TripIt data source without the noise of general travel research.

TripIt Calendar Use Cases

  • Identifying the next upcoming trip in a user's schedule.
  • Generating summaries of travel activities for the upcoming week or month.
  • Retrieving specific itinerary details such as hotel names or flight arrival times.
  • Confirming travel dates and locations for better schedule coordination.

How TripIt Calendar Works

  1. The agent identifies a user request regarding travel plans and invokes the TripIt Calendar skill.
  2. The script retrieves the TRIPIT_ICAL_URL from the configured environment variables.
  3. The Python-based parser fetches the iCal feed and extracts event data using the requests and icalendar libraries.
  4. It filters and organizes the events, grouping them into trips and individual itinerary items.
  5. A structured JSON payload is returned, containing the next trip summary and up to 20 future events for the agent to process.

TripIt Calendar Setup

To integrate this capability into your Openclaw Skills library, follow these steps:

  1. Locate your private iCal URL in TripIt under Settings > Publishing.
  2. Configure your environment variables in your Openclaw configuration file:
TRIPIT_ICAL_URL=https://www.tripit.com/feed/ical/private/your_unique_id/tripit.ics
  1. Ensure dependencies are installed in your Python environment:
pip install requests icalendar
  1. Execute the skill to verify the connection:
python3 final_tripit_ical.py --pretty

TripIt Calendar Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill returns a structured JSON object with the following taxonomy:

Key Data Type Description
next_trip Object Details of the nearest upcoming travel group.
upcoming_events Array A list of individual itinerary items (flights, hotels, etc.).
counts Object Numerical count of trips and events found.
generated_at String ISO timestamp of the data retrieval.

Each event item includes: summary, start/end times, location, status, and a description snippet.

TripIt Calendar Advanced Features

  • Virtual environment support: Optimized to run within the Openclaw virtual environment for isolated dependency management.
  • Pretty-print mode: Includes a --pretty flag for manual verification of travel data in a terminal view.
  • Intelligent fallback: Automatically checks the standard Openclaw environment paths (~/.openclaw/.env) for missing configuration variables.
  • Detailed metadata: Captures specific booking statuses and locations to enhance the quality of Openclaw Skills responses.
