What is Skill Evolver?

Skill Evolver is a sophisticated management layer designed to capture and refine reusable workflows inside an agent's environment. It functions as a safe, mode-aware evolution loop that monitors task execution and identifies patterns that should be preserved as persistent Openclaw Skills. By moving ephemeral logic into structured, versioned files, it allows your AI agent to grow more capable and specialized over time without manual intervention.

The skill is built with a safety-first philosophy, offering multiple levels of autonomy ranging from manual oversight to fully autonomous candidate publishing. Whether you are using the standalone installation or the plugin-backed TrustLoop integration, Skill Evolver ensures that your workspace intelligence remains organized, auditable, and easily reversible through built-in rollback mechanisms.

Skill Evolver Use Cases

  • Automating the conversion of complex, successful multi-step tool interactions into permanent agent capabilities.
  • Standardizing project-specific knowledge by identifying recurring request patterns and saving them as Openclaw Skills.
  • Implementing a structured peer-review process for agent-generated code and workflows.
  • Recovering and documenting stable paths from previously failed logic sequences to prevent future errors.

How Skill Evolver Works

  1. The agent monitors the workspace history for successful tasks, explicit user corrections, or recurring patterns.
  2. When a reusable workflow is identified, the agent generates a candidate skill draft and stores it in the .skill-evolver/ candidates directory.
  3. The system assesses the risk level of the new candidate based on established review policies.
  4. Depending on the active autonomy mode, the system either requests manual approval or proceeds with automated publishing.
  5. Upon approval, the draft is moved to the ./skills/ folder, versioned, and recorded in the central registry.
  6. An audit trail and backup are created, allowing users to rollback to a previous state if the new skill requires further refinement.

Skill Evolver Setup

Skill Evolver can be installed as a standalone tool or as part of a managed plugin suite. To get started with these Openclaw Skills, use the following commands:

# Install the skill directly into your workspace
openclaw install skill-evolver

# Optional: Set the autonomy mode (manual, assisted, or autonomous)
openclaw skill-evolver set-mode manual

Skill Evolver Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill maintains a structured state layout within the workspace root to manage the lifecycle of various Openclaw Skills:

Path Description
./.skill-evolver/candidates/ Stores draft skills currently under review or revision.
./.skill-evolver/backups/ Contains previous versions of published skills for rollback protection.
./.skill-evolver/registry.json The primary ledger tracking all managed skill versions and statuses.
./.skill-evolver/audit/ Structured event logs documenting every creation, publication, and rollback.
./skills/learned-/ The final destination for published Openclaw Skills managed by this system.

Skill Evolver Advanced Features

  • Multi-mode autonomy support allowing users to choose between manual human-in-the-loop approval or autonomous canary publishing.
  • Intelligent deduplication that patches existing managed skills instead of creating redundant candidates.
  • Native tool integration via skill_manage_managed for high-reliability lifecycle mutations and audit logging.
  • Robust version control including rollback capabilities that restore verified skill backups instantly.
  • Safety-aware scope filtering that protects bundled, third-party, and user-authored skills from unauthorized modification.
