What is Unstructured?

Unstructured is a specialized document processing platform that helps developers extract and clean data from unstructured file types, including PDFs, Word documents, and images. It is an essential tool for data scientists and engineers who need to prepare raw data for machine learning models, RAG pipelines, or analytical applications. By integrating this capability into Openclaw Skills, users can automate the complex task of document partitioning and layout analysis within their AI agent workflows.

This skill utilizes the Membrane framework to manage the complexities of authentication and credential refreshing. This ensures that your agents can focus on the logic of data extraction rather than the plumbing of API security, providing a secure and scalable way to handle document intelligence.

Unstructured Use Cases

  • Extracting text and tables from complex PDF reports for LLM training data.
  • Automating the conversion of legacy Word documents into machine-readable JSON for databases.
  • Building automated data pipelines for RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) systems using Openclaw Skills.
  • Scaling document ingestion for large-scale data analytics projects.
  • Processing unstructured files in headless server environments or CI/CD pipelines.

How Unstructured Works

  1. The user installs the Membrane CLI and authenticates their environment to manage secure connections.
  2. A connection to the Unstructured service is established or verified using a simple URL-based ensure command.
  3. The system polls the connection state, handling any necessary client-side actions such as OAuth or API key input.
  4. Once the connection is ready, the agent searches for specific processing actions using natural language intent discovery.
  5. Document processing actions are executed, passing files or parameters to the Unstructured API via a secure execution layer.
  6. For custom requirements, the agent can send direct requests through a managed proxy that handles all authentication headers automatically.

Unstructured Setup

To get started with Unstructured in your Openclaw Skills environment, first install the required CLI:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest

Authenticate your agent (replace openclaw with your specific agent type if needed):

membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Create a connection to the Unstructured service:

membrane connection ensure "https://unstructured.io" --json

If the connection state is BUILDING, wait for it to become READY:

npx @membranehq/cli connection get <id> --wait --json

Unstructured Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes document extraction data through a structured schema that includes metadata and extracted elements.

Property Description
connectionId The unique identifier for the specific Unstructured integration instance.
intent The natural language description used to discover specific document actions.
inputSchema Defines the required JSON parameters for partitioning or extraction actions.
outputSchema The resulting structure of the extracted document elements (text, tables, etc.).
state Reflects the current status of the connection lifecycle (READY, BUILDING, or ERROR).

Unstructured Advanced Features

  • Natural language action discovery allowing agents to find the right tool for specific document types using intent-based searching.
  • Transparent credential management through a server-side proxy, eliminating the need to store local API keys in Openclaw Skills.
  • Headless environment support via authorization URLs for remote or automated setups.
  • Direct proxy request support allowing for custom API calls while maintaining managed authentication headers.
  • Support for multiple agent types to adjust tooling and harness configurations dynamically.
