What is Voice Call?

The Voice Call skill is a robust communication extension for Openclaw Skills that bridges the gap between AI logic and real-world telephony. It enables developers to build agents capable of performing outbound dialing, delivering voice messages, and maintaining interactive conversations. By leveraging the voice-call plugin, agents can move beyond text-based chat into high-impact voice interactions.

This skill supports enterprise-grade providers including Twilio, Telnyx, and Plivo, ensuring reliable global reach. For development and testing environments, a mock provider is available to simulate call flows without incurring costs or requiring network connectivity, making it an essential tool for building sophisticated voice-enabled Openclaw Skills.

Voice Call Use Cases

  • Automating outbound notifications and critical alerts to users via phone.
  • Building AI-driven appointment reminders and confirmation systems.
  • Developing interactive voice response (IVR) systems where an agent handles the dialogue.
  • Conducting automated follow-ups or surveys through agent-initiated calls.
  • Rapid prototyping of telephony workflows using the built-in mock provider.

How Voice Call Works

  1. The Openclaw agent identifies a trigger requiring a phone call and invokes the initiate_call action.
  2. The system checks for the enabled voice-call plugin and specific provider configurations (Twilio, Telnyx, or Plivo).
  3. A call is dispatched to the target number with the initial specified message.
  4. The agent can use the callId to monitor the status or send additional messages using continue_call.
  5. Upon completion of the interaction, the agent executes the end_call action to terminate the connection.

Voice Call Setup

To use this feature within Openclaw Skills, you must enable the plugin and configure your preferred provider in your configuration file.

# Example CLI usage to start a call
openclaw voicecall call --to "+15555550123" --message "Hello from OpenClaw"

# Check the status of an ongoing call
openclaw voicecall status --call-id <id>

Ensure your config under plugins.entries.voice-call.config includes your credentials:

  • Twilio: accountSid, authToken, and fromNumber.
  • Telnyx: apiKey, connectionId, and fromNumber.
  • Plivo: authId, authToken, and fromNumber.
  • Mock: Set provider: "mock" for local testing.

Voice Call Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages call state and metadata through the following taxonomy:

Attribute Description
callId Unique identifier for the active or historical call session.
status The current state of the call (e.g., queued, ringing, in-progress, completed).
provider The active telephony gateway being utilized (Twilio, Telnyx, Plivo, or Mock).
message The string of text to be converted to speech during the call.
fromNumber The authorized outgoing caller ID configured in the plugin settings.

Voice Call Advanced Features

  • Multi-provider support allowing seamless switching between Twilio, Telnyx, and Plivo.
  • Dynamic conversation management via the continue_call and speak_to_user tools.
  • Real-time status tracking for programmatic handling of busy signals or unanswered calls.
  • Mock provider integration for local-first development and CI/CD testing without external API dependencies.
  • Agent-controlled call termination for precise flow control in Openclaw Skills.
