What is watchclaw?

watchclaw is a dedicated health monitoring daemon designed to ensure the high availability of your OpenClaw gateway. It acts as a fail-safe mechanism by continuously polling the gateway's status and tracking changes within the configuration repository. As a critical component for those managing production-grade Openclaw Skills, it automates the process of detecting configuration drift and performing emergency rollbacks to maintain system stability.

watchclaw Use Cases

  • Automatically reverting accidental configuration commits that crash the gateway API.
  • Stashing local, uncommitted changes that prevent the gateway from starting correctly.
  • Managing recovery cycles for Docker-based OpenClaw deployments.
  • Sending real-time failure and recovery notifications to system administrators via iMessage or webhooks.

How watchclaw Works

  1. Monitors the gateway's HTTP health endpoint at regular intervals defined in the configuration.
  2. Compares the current configuration state against the last known-good git commit.
  3. Detects if the gateway becomes unresponsive after a configuration change.
  4. Initiates a recovery workflow by either performing a git stash for uncommitted changes or a git revert for bad commits.
  5. Restarts the gateway service in either native or Docker mode and validates stability through a probation period.

watchclaw Setup

Install watchclaw using the official installation script:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jarvis4wang/watchclaw/main/install.sh | bash

Create a configuration file (e.g., watchclaw.conf) and start the watchdog service:

watchclaw --config /path/to/watchclaw.conf start

watchclaw Data Schema & Taxonomy

watchclaw leverages the git history of your configuration directory to manage state and recovery. Below is the primary data organization:

Parameter Description
GATEWAY_CONFIG_DIR The directory containing the git-tracked openclaw.json file.
RESTART_MODE Determines if recovery uses native process management or Docker commands.
Git HEAD Used as the reference point for known-good configuration states.
Probation State A transient state used to verify gateway health after a change is detected.

watchclaw Advanced Features

  • Multi-mode support for both native binary execution and Docker container management.
  • Pluggable alerting architecture with built-in support for iMessage, Webhooks, and custom shell commands.
  • Probation logic that prevents marking a gateway as healthy until it survives a set stability window.
  • Detailed logging and status monitoring to track the history of automated recovery events within Openclaw Skills environments.
