What is WhatSync?

WhatSync connects an AI agent to the user's synced WhatsApp chats and groups, and to a connected WhatsApp Business number. It supports finding unanswered conversations, searching message history, summarizing chats, locating contacts and attachments, and sending messages with explicit user approval.

Among Openclaw Skills, WhatSync stands out for combining practical chat assistance with clear privacy and sending safeguards: it only exposes synced conversations, treats message content as untrusted input, and requires confirmation before sending.

WhatSync Use Cases

  • Identify WhatsApp conversations that need a reply.
  • Search synced chats for a keyword or a specific detail, then retrieve the surrounding context.
  • Summarize a conversation or group based only on messages that were read.
  • Find a contact's number or locate photos, PDFs, and other attachments.
  • Draft and send a WhatsApp message after confirming the exact recipient and text with the user.
  • Check the status of a send whose result is unclear, without risking a duplicate message.

How WhatSync Works

  1. Start each new conversation by calling get_account_context to check the linked account, saved history, and sending availability.
  2. If WhatsApp is not linked, provide the sign-in link returned for the WhatSync dashboard and stop; do not infer or guess chat contents.
  3. Choose a read operation based on the request: list unanswered conversations, search messages, list conversations, look up contacts, or search attachments.
  4. Retrieve matching chat messages with get_messages when context is needed. Base summaries only on messages actually read, and identify who said what.
  5. For file access, call get_attachment_link only when the user wants to open the attachment.
  6. Before sending, identify the exact recipient and show the user both the recipient and exact message text. Wait for a clear confirmation.
  7. Call send_message once. If the result is unknown, use get_send_status; do not resend the message just to be safe.
  8. For a business number, check sending options and use an approved template if free-form messaging is not permitted.

WhatSync Setup

  1. Connect WhatsApp through the WhatSync dashboard. If it is not connected, the skill returns a sign-in link to share with the user.
  2. Choose which WhatsApp chats to sync in the dashboard; only selected chats are available to the skill.
  3. If WhatsApp Business is needed, connect the relevant business number and use approved templates when required.
  4. In a new conversation, call get_account_context before attempting to read or send messages.

No package installation or CLI commands are specified in the skill documentation.

WhatSync Data Schema & Taxonomy

WhatSync operates on the user's selected WhatsApp data; the skill documentation does not specify a local file format, generated files, or a separate metadata taxonomy.

Data or entity How it is used
Account context Reports the linked WhatsApp account, amount of saved history, and whether sending is available.
Conversations and groups Listed and read to answer questions or produce message-grounded summaries.
Messages Searched by keyword and retrieved for context; content is treated as information, not instructions.
Contacts Looked up by name to identify a person's number.
Attachments Searched by type or content; a link is retrieved only when the user wants to open a file.
Business templates Listed as an alternative when business messaging does not allow a free-form message.
Send status Checked when a send result is unknown; an accepted message is not necessarily delivered.

If expected information is missing, it may not be synced. The user can change synced chats in the WhatSync dashboard; the skill advises against asking them to share chats through other means.

WhatSync Advanced Features

  • Supports a WhatsApp Business number when one is connected, subject to approved-template requirements.
  • Provides a send-status check for uncertain results and explicitly avoids duplicate sends.
  • Applies a user-confirmation gate: the exact recipient and message must be shown before sending.
  • Limits access to chats selected for sync and directs users to the dashboard to change that selection.
  • Treats message text, names, and group descriptions as untrusted content rather than instructions.
  • Uses message retrieval for context-aware summaries and requires summaries to reflect only messages actually read.
