What is WordPal?

WordPal is a sophisticated English learning companion designed to integrate directly into your chat environment through Openclaw Skills. It leverages the FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) algorithm to calculate optimal review intervals, ensuring long-term retention of new vocabulary. By analyzing your interaction history and memory within the agent environment, WordPal creates a personalized learning journey that moves beyond static word lists to provide dynamic, context-aware language building.

This skill is built for users who want to turn their daily digital interactions into learning opportunities. It supports 17 different question types and provides detailed AI-driven analysis of your learning state, making it a powerful addition to the ecosystem of Openclaw Skills.

WordPal Use Cases

  • Daily English vocabulary practice driven by previous chat interactions.
  • Strategic exam preparation using scientifically-backed spaced repetition.
  • Monitoring language acquisition progress through detailed AI-generated reports.
  • Receiving automated learning reminders via scheduled tasks.

How WordPal Works

  1. The agent initializes the session by executing a context script to verify if a user profile exists.
  2. New users are guided through an onboarding process to establish their linguistic profile and learning goals.
  3. The system routes the user based on intent, either into the learn mode for practice or report mode for progress analysis.
  4. During learning sessions, the AI presents questions chosen from 17 distinct types based on the user's current mastery level.
  5. User responses are processed; correct answers update the FSRS schedule, while incorrect answers trigger a hint flow for guided correction.
  6. All interactions are recorded to refine the user's memory profile and schedule future reviews via cron.

WordPal Setup

To install and configure WordPal as part of your Openclaw Skills library, ensure you have the necessary runtime environment:

# Check for Node.js requirement
node --version

# The skill is managed via the Openclaw interface
# Ensure cron capabilities are enabled for reminders

All scripts are located in the {baseDir}/scripts/ directory and are invoked automatically by the AI agent during the session flow.

WordPal Data Schema & Taxonomy

WordPal organizes its data through a structured system that tracks both linguistic progress and scheduling. While it uses an internal SQLite database, the data is categorized as follows:

Data Type Description
User Profile Contains the unique user persona and linguistic baseline.
FSRS Metrics Stores stability, difficulty, and retrievability scores for each word.
Question Bank A collection of 17 question types including AI-generated context.
Event Logs Tracks correct, wrong, hint-assisted, and skipped responses.
Hint Tokens One-time valid tokens used to manage the hint-to-answer workflow.

WordPal Advanced Features

  • Implementation of the Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler (FSRS) for optimized memory retention.
  • Automated study reminders leveraging Openclaw Skills native cron capabilities.
  • Multi-stage answer verification that distinguishes between immediate recall and hint-assisted memory.
  • Deep integration with agent memory to extract and prioritize words encountered in previous conversations.
  • Extensive question variety including 17 different formats to test vocabulary in diverse contexts.
