What is Workspace Hygiene?

Workspace Hygiene is a technical maintenance skill designed to keep AI agent environments organized and RAG-friendly. It ensures that file structures remain canonical, memory entries follow established tagging protocols, and project documentation stays up to date. By integrating this into your Openclaw Skills library, you prevent the degradation of retrieval quality that occurs when workspaces become cluttered or inconsistent, ensuring your agent always has a high-quality data foundation.

Workspace Hygiene Use Cases

  • Performing automated weekly workspace audits to maintain high performance.
  • Cleaning up fragmented memory files and consolidating logs into standardized formats.
  • Auditing project folders for missing README files to improve context retrieval during RAG operations.
  • Identifying and organizing files that have been placed in incorrect directory locations within the workspace root.

How Workspace Hygiene Works

  1. The skill analyzes the workspace root to identify files or folders that violate the canonical layout defined in the STRUCTURE.md guide.
  2. It scans the memory directory to detect outdated timestamp formats and identifies daily logs older than 30 days that require distillation into the main memory file.
  3. Every project subdirectory is checked for a valid README.md to ensure the agent has searchable context for memory_search functions.
  4. Recent memory entries are validated against a specific tagging schema including DECISION, FACT, PROJECT, RULE, and EVENT tags.
  5. A detailed Health Report is generated and stored in the system project folder with prioritized action items and suggested move or archive commands.

Workspace Hygiene Setup

To deploy Workspace Hygiene, install the script to your agent workspace and run the following command to initiate an audit:

python3 skills/workspace-hygiene/scripts/hygiene.py --workspace ~/.openclaw/workspace

For continuous maintenance, it is recommended to add a Weekly Hygiene task to your HEARTBEAT.md file, ensuring the command is executed every Monday.

Workspace Hygiene Data Schema & Taxonomy

File Path Description
projects/system/hygiene-YYYY-MM-DD.md The generated audit report containing structure violations and recommended actions.
memory/ The target directory for scanning timestamp violations and untagged entries.
STRUCTURE.md The source of truth used to validate the canonical workspace directory layout.
MEMORY.md The global memory file, flagged for manual trimming if it exceeds 150 lines.
projects/*/README.md Required documentation files for every project to ensure optimal RAG retrieval.

Workspace Hygiene Advanced Features

  • Auto-fix capabilities for consolidating fragmented timestamp-format memory files into daily logs.
  • Support for specific agent targeting, allowing for hygiene checks on individual agent workspaces.
  • Integrated memory format validation that flags untagged entries for manual review to preserve context.
  • Automated line-count monitoring for global memory files to prevent context window overflow.
