What is Search X?

Search X is a versatile tool designed for Openclaw Skills that provides real-time access to the X platform. It offers two distinct operational modes: xAI Grok for AI-powered synthesis with citations and the native X API for raw data retrieval. This skill allows developers and AI agents to track breaking news, monitor brand mentions, and analyze social trends directly within their existing workflows.

By bridging the gap between LLMs and live social data, Search X empowers agents to provide up-to-the-minute information that static training data cannot reach. Whether you need a deep dive into discussions from the last 30 days or a quick snapshot of today's trending topics, this skill delivers structured, actionable data from one of the world's largest real-time information sources.

Search X Use Cases

  • Real-time monitoring of breaking news and industry trends.
  • Researching public sentiment and discussions around specific product launches or companies.
  • Filtering tweets from specific high-authority handles to curate expert insights.
  • Extracting social media links and engagement metrics for digital marketing analysis.
  • Supplementing AI agent knowledge with data from the last 30 days of X activity.

How Search X Works

  1. The user or agent triggers a search request with specific keywords and optional filters like date range or handles.
  2. The skill selects the operational mode based on flags: default xAI Grok or optional --x-api.
  3. The request is sent to either the xAI Responses API (using the x_search tool) or the native X Search endpoint.
  4. Results are retrieved, including tweet content, user metadata, timestamps, and direct URLs.
  5. The skill formats the data into the requested output style (compact, JSON, or links-only) and returns it to the agent for processing.

Search X Setup

To use this integration within Openclaw Skills, you must configure your environment variables based on your preferred search provider.

Option 1: xAI API (Default)

export XAI_API_KEY="xai-YOUR-KEY"

Get your key at: https://console.x.ai

Option 2: Native X API

export X_BEARER_TOKEN="YOUR-BEARER-TOKEN"

Get your token at: https://console.x.com

Basic Command

node ./scripts/search.js "AI developments"

Search X Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill returns structured data containing the following fields for each tweet or search result found. You can control the level of detail via CLI flags.

Field Description
@username The handle and display name of the tweet author.
Content The text of the tweet or AI-synthesized summary.
Date/Time Timestamp of when the tweet was posted.
Link Direct URL to the specific tweet for verification.
Metrics Engagement stats like likes and retweets (available in --x-api mode).

Output formats include --json for full data, --compact for content only, and --links-only for URL lists.

Search X Advanced Features

  • Dual-mode operation switching between agentic Grok search and raw native API data.
  • Granular filtering capabilities allowing users to target specific handles or exclude bot accounts.
  • Flexible time-based queries supporting searches from the last 24 hours up to 30 days.
  • Citation support to ensure that all information provided by the agent is backed by verifiable X posts.
  • Integration-ready JSON output for building automated social media monitoring pipelines.
