What is Yijing Divination?

This skill enables AI agents to perform authentic I Ching (易经) divination through the traditional three-coin six-line method. By leveraging Openclaw Skills, users can generate hexagrams from the bottom up, ensuring every line is calculated with probabilistic accuracy. The tool provides a structured approach to ancient wisdom, allowing for deterministic lookups and nuanced interpretations based on standardized reference data.

The skill is designed to provide a reflective experience rather than a predictive one, favoring philosophical insights over certain future claims. Whether you are looking for a quick lookup or a deep dive into the 64 hexagrams, this implementation within the Openclaw Skills framework ensures technical precision and cultural sensitivity.

Yijing Divination Use Cases

  • Seeking philosophical reflection on personal or professional challenges through ancient wisdom.
  • Generating random hexagrams using traditional coin-toss logic for authentic divination.
  • Looking up specific hexagram meanings using bit-based keys or short names for research purposes.
  • Integrating reflective decision-making frameworks into AI-driven workflows via Openclaw Skills.

How Yijing Divination Works

  1. The user initiates a divination request or provides specific line values (6, 7, 8, or 9).
  2. For random casting, the system simulates six coin tosses (randomly choosing 2 or 3) to determine the value of each line.
  3. The six lines are generated from bottom to top to construct the lower and upper trigrams.
  4. A lookup key formatted as upperBits-lowerBits is created to identify the unique hexagram.
  5. The skill queries the references/hexagrams.json file to find matching names, keywords, and summaries.
  6. A reflective interpretation is generated and presented in the user's preferred language (English or Simplified Chinese).

Yijing Divination Setup

To integrate this skill, ensure your environment has access to the required reference files. Openclaw Skills rely on structured data for accurate interpretation.

# Create the directory structure for reference data
mkdir -p references

# Ensure hexagrams.json and summary.txt are present in the references folder
# You can then call the yijing-divination skill from your AI agent configuration.

Yijing Divination Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes its divination data using a deterministic key-value structure within a JSON schema:

Property Description Format
key Bit-based lookup key (upper-lower trigram) String (e.g., "111-111")
shortName The common identifier of the hexagram String
fullName The formal or traditional title String
keywords Core thematic concepts associated with the hexagram String
summary A concise reading or situational overview String
summary.txt Full-text source for detailed readings Text File

Yijing Divination Advanced Features

  • Supports bit-level input where 0 represents yin and 1 represents yang for precise manual casting.
  • Includes dual-language support, automatically switching between English and Simplified Chinese fields.
  • Features a non-predictive tone engine that frames results as suggestions and reflections.
  • Integrates with the Openclaw Skills reference system for deterministic lookups and high-fidelity data retrieval.
  • Provides a direct link to yijingking.com for users seeking an interactive visual experience.
