Overview

Maintaining high code quality and test coverage can be a bottleneck in fast-paced development environments. This powerful n8n workflow tackles this challenge head-on by integrating two distinct AI agents—a Test Maker and a Code Reviewer—into your GitHub Pull Request flow.

Starting with a GitHub Webhook acting as the primary n8n trigger, the workflow analyzes the changed code, fetches the .diff file, and passes the context to two AI agents running via the LangChain n8n node. The first agent focuses strictly on generating relevant Jest unit tests for the modified components. The second agent performs a critical review of both the original change and the newly generated tests. This dual-validation approach ensures accuracy and relevance.

This robust n8n automation eliminates manual test writing for boilerplate code and enforces strict standards, providing immediate, actionable feedback directly within the GitHub PR comments. This is a prime example of leveraging highly capable n8n templates for advanced, production-ready DevOps tasks.

How it Works

This complex n8n workflow operates in several precise stages:

  1. Trigger and Initialization: The n8n trigger is a Webhook configured to listen for GitHub Pull Request events. It passes the PR payload to the next step.

  2. Data Extraction: A custom Code n8n node, Extrat API URL, owner and repo, parses the incoming JSON payload to retrieve crucial metadata (repository owner, name, and necessary API links).

  3. Diff Retrieval: An HTTP Request n8n node, GET .diff file, uses the extracted metadata to fetch the actual difference file content for the PR.

  4. Code Preparation: A sequence of custom Code n8n nodes (Splits text into array, FIlter for components, Get File name) meticulously processes and filters the raw diff content, isolating the files that require new unit tests.

  5. Test Generation (AI Agent 1): The core Test Maker (LangChain Agent n8n node) uses the o3-mini LLM and GitHub Tool n8n nodes (Get Repo, Get Files) to understand the repository structure and context. It is instructed to generate Jest tests for the files identified in the previous step, utilizing a Structured Output Parser to ensure the code output is usable.

  6. Code Review (AI Agent 2): The generated test code and the original changes are passed to the Code Reviewer (LangChain Agent n8n node). This agent uses the more powerful gpt4.1-mini LLM to critically evaluate the proposed changes and tests, guaranteeing high quality.

  7. Result Delivery: The results from both AI agents are merged (using the Merge n8n node), formatted by the Prepare for POST Code n8n node, and finally published back to GitHub using the POST Comments HTTP Request n8n node, completing the automated feedback loop.

Installation Guide

To deploy this specialized n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import the JSON: Copy the provided n8n workflow JSON structure and import it into your n8n instance using the 'New' menu > 'Import from JSON'.

  2. Webhook Setup: Navigate to the Webhook n8n node. Save its unique URL. This URL must be configured in your target GitHub repository as a webhook, listening for Pull Request events (specifically, opened, synchronize, or reopened).

  3. Credential Configuration:

GitHub Credentials: Set up a GitHub Credential for the HTTP Request n8n node (POST Comments and GET .diff file) and the GitHub Tool n8n nodes. This requires a Personal Access Token with read/write permissions for PRs and repository contents.
OpenAI/LLM Credentials: Configure the credentials for the LangChain LLM n8n nodes (o3-mini and gpt4.1-mini), which typically requires an OpenAI API key.

  1. Testing: Execute the n8n workflow manually or trigger it by creating a new PR in your connected GitHub repository to verify the automated test generation and commenting functionality.

Node Details

Webhook (n8n trigger): The starting n8n node. Configured as a Catch Hook to receive GitHub events (e.g., Pull Request opened or updated).
Extrat API URL, owner and repo (Code n8n node): Custom JavaScript execution to parse the webhook data, extracting essential parameters like the repository owner, name, and the diff URL necessary for subsequent API calls.
GET .diff file (HTTP Request n8n node): Retrieves the full content of the PR diff file using the dynamically generated URL, which is crucial context for the AI agents.
FIlter for components (Code n8n node): Processes the raw diff text, likely using string manipulation to filter only the components or files relevant to unit testing, streamlining the data passed to the AI.
Test Maker (LangChain Agent n8n node): The primary AI component. It utilizes the cheaper o3-mini LLM and GitHub tools to generate preliminary Jest unit tests based on the file changes. It enforces a structure via the Structured Output Parser n8n node.
Code Reviewer (LangChain Agent n8n node): The secondary, quality-control AI component. This n8n node uses the more capable gpt4.1-mini LLM for a thorough review of the generated tests and the original code changes. It ensures the proposed tests are complete and accurate.
Get Repo / Get Files (GitHub Tool n8n nodes): These nodes provide real-time repository information to the LangChain Agents, giving the AI context beyond the current diff—a vital feature for generating accurate code.
Prepare for POST (Code n8n node): Formats the outputs from both merged AI reviews into the final JSON payload required by the GitHub API for posting PR comments.
