Overview

This specialized n8n workflow transforms routine Trello operations into callable tools accessible by n8n AI Agents. By utilizing the MCP Server n8n trigger, this setup provides a comprehensive framework for LLMs to manage tasks without manual intervention. The integration allows the AI to perform complex actions such as creating new cards, updating descriptions, moving tasks across lists, adding comments, and searching the board. This specific n8n workflow is not executed linearly; instead, it waits for function calls from an n8n Agent. This architecture leverages the power of n8n templates for building highly responsive, AI-driven project management automation. Every Trello function is exposed as a distinct n8n node, ready to receive dynamic inputs via the $fromAI expression, ensuring precise and context-aware project administration.

How it Works

The core of this solution is the MCP Trello n8n trigger, which acts as the entry point for all AI interactions. When an external n8n Agent decides it needs to perform a Trello action (e.g., 'move task X to Done'), the n8n Agent sends a structured function call request to the MCP endpoint defined in this n8n workflow. The n8n trigger routes this request to the corresponding Trello n8n node. For example, updating a card triggers the trelloupdatecard n8n node. Parameters required for the Trello operation (like CardID or NewDescription) are dynamically passed using the $fromAI mechanism, ensuring the data is sourced directly from the AI's parsed request. After the selected n8n node successfully executes the Trello API call, the result (e.g., card data or success confirmation) is formatted and returned to the calling n8n Agent via the MCP Trello n8n trigger output, enabling the Agent to continue the conversation or planning process.

Installation Guide

  1. Import the n8n workflow: Copy the provided JSON data and paste it directly into your n8n instance using the 'New' -> 'Import from JSON' option.

  2. Setup Credentials: This n8n workflow requires Trello API credentials for the Trello Tool nodes and the HTTP Request Tool nodes. Configure a Trello API credential globally.

  3. Configure MCP Trigger: The MCP Trello n8n trigger requires setting a specific Path that your AI Agent workflows will target.

  4. Configure Trello Node IDs: Update all placeholder IDs (YOURTRELLOLISTIDBACKLOG, YOURTRELLOBOARDID, YOURMEMBERID) in the Trello n8n nodes (trellocreatecard, trellolistbacklog, trellolist_lists) to match your actual Trello board setup.

  5. Activate: Ensure the n8n workflow is activated to expose the tool endpoints to your AI Agent system.

Node Details

MCP Trello (MCP Trigger Node):
Function: Serves as the primary n8n trigger, exposing all connected Trello n8n nodes as callable tools for external AI Agents. This is the heart of the AI automation.
Key Configuration: Defines the endpoint path (YOURMCPPATH) where the AI Agent will send its function calls.
trellocreatecard (Trello Tool n8n node):
Function: Creates a new Trello card in a specified list.
Key Configuration: Uses dynamic inputs like name={{ $fromAI('cardname', ...)}} and description={{ $fromAI('carddescription', ...)}} to extract data provided by the AI.
trelloupdatecard (HTTP Request Tool n8n node):
Function: Performs granular updates (name, description, due date, list movement) on an existing card using the Trello API.
Key Configuration: Constructs a JSON body dynamically, only including fields provided by the AI function call (e.g., idList: $fromAI('NewListID',...)).
trellosearchcards (HTTP Request Tool n8n node):
Function: Allows the AI to query the Trello board using Trello's powerful native search syntax.
Key Configuration: Takes the Query parameter directly from the AI input: query={{ $fromAI('Query', ...)}}.
trelloaddcomment (Trello Tool n8n node):
Function: Adds conversational comments to a specific task based on the AI's instructions.
Key Configuration: Requires CardID and CommentText using the $fromAI expression.
trellolistbacklog & trellolistlists (Trello Tool n8n nodes):
* Function: Provide read-only capabilities, allowing the AI to understand the current state of tasks or the structure of the Trello board columns, aiding in better decision-making.
