Overview

Maintaining consistent, high-quality tags across a busy WordPress site is challenging and time-consuming. This specialized n8n workflow solves this by fully automating the process using powerful AI models.

The system fetches a target blog post, uses the OpenAI n8n node (Blog Tags Generator) to analyze the content and generate a list of ideal tags. Crucially, the n8n template incorporates sophisticated logic to check if a generated tag already exists in your WordPress database. If it does, it maps the existing Tag ID; if it's new, it creates it. This prevents duplicate tags (e.g., 'AI' vs. 'ai'). The entire list of validated Tag IDs is then aggregated and used to update the original post, creating a highly efficient, intelligent, and scalable automation pipeline.

How it Works

  1. Trigger & Fetch: The n8n workflow begins with a manual Execute n8n trigger. It immediately fetches the content of the latest or specified WordPress blog post using the Fetch One WordPress Blog n8n node.

  2. AI Analysis: The raw content is passed to the Blog Tags Generator (a LangChain LLM Chain node), which uses an OpenAI model to analyze the text and output 5-10 suggested tags. A Structured Output Parser ensures the output is always consistently formatted as a list of tags.

  3. Parallel Tag Check: Simultaneously, the n8n workflow executes the Fetch All Tags HTTP Request to retrieve all existing WordPress tags for mapping purposes.

  4. Loop Preparation: The AI-generated tags are split out using the Split Out for Loop n8n node, and the process enters the Tagging Loop (Split in Batches), processing each potential tag individually.

  5. Creation Attempt (Error Handling): The Create New Tag HTTP Request attempts to create the tag. Because it is configured with onError: continueErrorOutput, if the tag already exists (resulting in an API error), the n8n workflow continues down a different path.

  6. Tag ID Mapping: If the creation succeeded, the Return Tag ID & Name n8n node saves the new ID. If it failed (tag existed), the Return Name Only n8n node passes only the tag name.

  7. Merging Existing IDs: The Merge n8n node combines the passed tag names with the list of all existing tags fetched earlier, successfully retrieving the ID for any pre-existing tags.

  8. Aggregation: All successfully mapped or newly created Tag IDs are collected by the Merge Old and Mapped Tags n8n node and finally condensed into a single array by the Aggregate n8n node.

  9. Final Update: The n8n workflow concludes by updating the original WordPress post using the final aggregated list of correct Tag IDs.

Installation Guide

This specific n8n template requires two primary credentials and minor URL modifications:

1. Import the n8n workflow

  1. Copy the raw JSON code provided.

  2. In your n8n instance, click Workflows -> New -> Import from JSON.

  3. Paste the code and save the new n8n workflow.

2. Configure Credentials

OpenAI API Key: Configure your OpenAI credential named n8n - Vekrro (or update the credential reference in the LLM nodes). This is mandatory for the AI analysis n8n node.
WordPress API (App Password): Configure your WordPress credential named Vekrro.com. This requires a WordPress App Password for API access.

3. Update Domain URLs

Critical: Several HTTP Request n8n nodes use placeholder URLs (https:///wp-json/...).

  1. Open the Fetch All Tags n8n node.

  2. Open the Create New Tag n8n node.

  3. Replace https:// with your actual WordPress website domain in both nodes.

Node Details

Execute (n8n trigger): Manual start to initiate the testing or execution of this powerful n8n workflow.
Fetch One WordPress Blog (WordPress n8n node): Retrieves content data for the most recent post. Key Configuration: Operation: getAll, Limit: 1.
Blog Tags Generator (LangChain LLM Chain n8n node): The core AI processing unit. Uses the post content as input and a detailed system message instructing the AI to act as a tag generator, outputting 5-10 SEO tags.
Structured Output Parser (LangChain n8n node): Ensures the AI output conforms to a strict JSON schema containing a list of tags.
Fetch All Tags (HTTP Request n8n node): Retrieves existing tags from the WordPress API before creating new ones. This is essential for the mapping logic.
Create New Tag (HTTP Request n8n node): Attempts to create a new tag. Key Configuration: Method: POST, onError: continueErrorOutput. This crucial setting allows the n8n workflow to handle failure (tag already exists) gracefully.
Return Tag ID & Name / Return Name Only (Set n8n node): Conditional paths based on the success or failure of the tag creation, ensuring either the newly generated ID or just the existing name is carried forward.
Merge (Merge n8n node): Connects the existing tag database data with the required tags, mapping existing tag names back to their corresponding WordPress IDs.

  • Aggregate (Aggregate n8n node): The final step before updating the post. It collects and consolidates all valid Tag IDs into a single, clean array for the final API call.
