Anyone interested in using n8n for custom AI integration and rapid API deployment.

Overview

This n8n workflow is designed to solve the challenge of integrating slow or asynchronous external APIs, specifically the Nero AI Business API for image enhancement. Traditional synchronous API calls often time out while waiting for a task to complete. This n8n workflow template bypasses this by using a robust polling loop. The automation starts with an external request (the n8n trigger Webhook), initiates the AI task, waits a short period, and then continually queries the task status until the result is 'done'. This ensures the calling application receives the final processed image data, making this n8n automation highly reliable for business critical AI operations.

How it Works

The process begins when a POST request hits the defined path of the Webhook n8n trigger.

  1. Task Creation: The data from the n8n trigger is immediately passed to the Create task n8n node (an HTTP Request), which calls the Nero AI API to initiate a FaceDetection service, returning a taskid.

  2. Initial Wait: The n8n workflow then moves to the Wait n8n node, pausing the execution flow for 2 seconds. This is essential for asynchronous processing.

  3. Status Query: After the wait, the Query task status n8n node (another HTTP Request) uses the received taskid to check the progress of the AI task.

  4. Conditional Check (If): The If n8n node evaluates the response. It checks if the Nero API return code is 0 (success) AND if the task status is 'done'.

  5. Polling Loop:

If the task is not done (False branch), the n8n workflow loops back to the Wait n8n node, restarting the 2-second delay and re-querying the status. This polling continues until completion.
If the task is done (True branch), the flow proceeds to the final step.

  1. Response: The Respond to Webhook n8n node sends the final, processed image data back to the original caller of the n8n trigger, successfully completing the n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

To deploy this n8n workflow and start using these powerful n8n templates, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided JSON and import it into your n8n instance via the 'Workflows' > 'New' > 'Import from JSON' option.

  2. API Key Setup: Obtain your API key from the Nero AI Business platform.

  3. Credential Configuration: Edit the Create task n8n node and the Query task status n8n node. Update the x-neroai-api-key header with your actual key in both HTTP Request configurations.

  4. AI Service Customization: In the Create task n8n node, modify the JSON body (type and body) to select the desired Nero AI service (e.g., Image Upscaling, Face Enhancement) as documented in their API guides.

  5. Activation: Ensure the n8n workflow is active. Execute it once in test mode to generate a live webhook URL (the n8n trigger endpoint).

  6. Testing: Use tools like Postman to send a POST request to the generated webhook URL to test the complete asynchronous polling n8n workflow.

Node Details

Webhook (n8n trigger):
Function: Acts as the starting n8n trigger for the entire n8n workflow, exposing a custom API endpoint.
Key Configuration: Method set to POST and Response Mode set to Response Node (handled by Respond to Webhook).
Create task (HTTP Request n8n node):
Function: Initiates the AI image processing task with Nero AI, providing the input image URL and receiving a unique taskid.
Key Configuration: Method POST, URL https://ai.nero.com/biz/api/task, requires custom header x-neroai-api-key.
Wait (n8n node):
Function: Pauses the n8n workflow execution for a defined period (2 seconds) before polling the task status again.
Key Configuration: Amount set to 2 seconds.
Query task status (HTTP Request n8n node):
Function: Retrieves the current status and results of the AI task using the dynamically passed taskid in the query parameters.
Key Configuration: Method GET, dynamically extracts ={{ $json.data.taskid }} for the taskid query parameter.
If (n8n node):
Function: Controls the asynchronous loop. Checks if the AI task is successfully completed (code = 0 and status = 'done').
Key Configuration: Conditions check both success code and 'done' status. If False, the n8n workflow loops back to the Wait n8n node.
Respond to Webhook (n8n node):
* Function: Sends the final JSON output (containing the processed image results) back to the client who initiated the n8n trigger.
