Who is this best for?

Data Engineers needing to synchronize low-code data sources like Airtable with a robust SQL database.
Developers looking for powerful n8n templates for complex data migration tasks.
Users who require custom database operations (like DDL) handled reliably by an n8n node.
Automation Specialists managing critical data pipelines using n8n.

Overview

Data silos are challenging. This sophisticated n8n workflow solves the problem of migrating structured data from flexible tools like Airtable into a rigid, performance-optimized database like PostgreSQL. This specific n8n workflow handles multiple complex steps: credential verification, dynamic schema retrieval, field type mapping, automated table creation, and efficient record upserting in batches. Using the flexibility of a custom n8n node with Javascript/SQL, this process ensures data integrity during migration. This comprehensive solution provides reliable data synchronization, making it one of the most powerful n8n templates available for database movement. The process starts with a simple n8n trigger (a webhook) and systematically executes all necessary steps, providing immediate feedback on success or failure.

How it Works

  1. System Initialization (n8n trigger): The process begins when the Airtable - Postgres system webhook receives a command payload (e.g., validate credentials, migrate, or delete table). This initial n8n trigger starts the sequence.

  2. Command Routing: A Switch n8n node routes the request based on the command type. This allows one n8n workflow to handle different operational modes.

  3. Credential Testing: Separate branches test the connectivity and permissions for both Airtable and PostgreSQL. If successful, results are returned via the Respond to Webhook n8n node.

  4. Schema Retrieval: For migration commands, the n8n workflow retrieves the Airtable schema (tables and fields) via an HTTP Request n8n node (get schema).

  5. Schema Transformation and Looping: The workflow iterates over the retrieved tables using the Loop Over Items n8n node. Custom Code n8n nodes (New mapper) transform Airtable field types into compatible PostgreSQL data types.

  6. Database Creation: If the table does not exist, the Create database Code n8n node dynamically executes SQL commands (DDL) to create the necessary table structure in PostgreSQL.

  7. Data Fetch and Upsert: Following table creation, the Get records HTTP Request n8n node fetches the records from Airtable. The Loop Over Items1 n8n node iterates through these records in batches.

  8. Data Synchronization: A final Upsert records Code n8n node performs a batch upsert, efficiently synchronizing the data into PostgreSQL. This careful step ensures the reliability of the n8n workflow.

  9. Deletion Process: If the initial n8n trigger specified a delete command, the workflow uses the Delete table Code n8n node to execute DROP TABLE commands in PostgreSQL.

Installation Guide

  1. Import the n8n workflow: Copy the provided JSON data. In your n8n instance, go to the Workflows section and click 'New', then 'Import from JSON'.

  2. Configure Credentials/Variables: This n8n workflow uses various Set and Code n8n nodes (e.g., postgres credentials, airtable fields) where connection details (API keys, database URI, host, user, password) must be hardcoded or injected via environment variables for successful execution.

  3. Activate the n8n trigger: Locate the Airtable - Postgres system Webhook n8n trigger node and activate the workflow. Copy the generated Webhook URL.

  4. Testing: Send the appropriate JSON payload to the Webhook URL to test credential validation or initiate the migration process using this robust n8n workflow.

Node Details

Airtable - Postgres system (Webhook n8n trigger): This node acts as the primary n8n trigger, initiating the entire migration process based on an external command signal.
Switch (n8n node): Crucial for flow control, directing the subsequent actions based on the operation requested (migration, validation, deletion).
get schema (HTTP Request n8n node): Handles interaction with the Airtable API to retrieve the table and column structure necessary for generating SQL DDL.
Loop Over Items (Split In Batches n8n node): Used extensively to process multiple tables or large batches of records, ensuring the scalability of the n8n workflow.
Create database (Code n8n node): An essential custom n8n node that uses Javascript to generate and execute dynamic SQL statements for creating tables in the Postgres database.
Upsert records (Code n8n node): This high-performance n8n node handles the data loading phase, executing batch upsert logic to synchronize records efficiently.

  • Respond to Webhook (n8n node): Provides real-time feedback to the system that initiated the n8n trigger, confirming success, failure, or validation status.
