  • Users who want to leverage advanced AI scripting within an n8n workflow environment.

  • Anyone searching for practical n8n templates for development process automation.

Overview

Modern development requires integrating data across disparate tools—Jira for task management, Port.io for operational context, and GitHub for code resolution. This powerful n8n workflow bridges these systems. It solves the problem of manual task assignment and context gathering by automatically detecting when a Jira ticket is ready for development.

When a specific criteria is met in Jira, this n8n automation queries Port.io's context lake using an advanced AI model to synthesize a complete, development-ready brief. It then creates a detailed GitHub issue, immediately assigning it to GitHub Copilot, ensuring the AI agent has the full operational context required for fast and accurate resolution. This integrated n8n template significantly speeds up the development lifecycle, moving tickets from approval to coding agent assignment instantly.

How it Works

This comprehensive n8n workflow operates through several crucial steps:

  1. Trigger Event: The flow starts with the 'On Jira ticket updated' n8n trigger, monitoring Jira for issue update events.

  2. Condition Check: The 'Is ready for assignment?' n8n node acts as a gatekeeper. It only proceeds if the ticket status is 'In Progress', includes the 'productapproved' label, and specifically excludes the 'copilotassigned' label (preventing loops).

  3. Context Generation: The 'Extract context from Port' n8n node executes an AI prompt against Port.io's catalog. This process extracts relevant operational data (repositories, services, dependencies) related to the Jira issue, generating a structured JSON response containing the optimized GitHub issue title and body, complete with a directive for @github-copilot.

  4. Parsing: The 'Parse Port AI response' n8n node retrieves and formats the output from the AI invocation.

  5. GitHub Issue Creation: The 'Create a GitHub issue' n8n node uses the AI-generated title and body to open a new issue in the target repository.

  6. Success Validation: The 'Is issue creation successful?' n8n node ensures the GitHub issue was created successfully before proceeding to assignment.

  7. Copilot Assignment: The 'Assign issue to Copilot' n8n node adds a comment to the new GitHub issue, explicitly calling @copilot to take ownership.

  8. Jira Feedback: Simultaneously, the n8n workflow completes the loop by updating Jira. The 'Add issue link to Jira ticket' n8n node posts a comment with the link to the newly created GitHub issue, and the 'Mark ticket as assigned' n8n node adds the 'copilot_assigned' label to the original ticket, finalizing the execution of this complex n8n automation.

Installation Guide

To set up this powerful n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided n8n workflow JSON and paste it into your n8n instance using the 'New' button -> 'Import from JSON'.

  2. Jira Credentials: Configure the 'On Jira ticket updated' n8n trigger and subsequent Jira nodes using your Jira Software Cloud API credentials. Ensure your Jira webhook is correctly configured to send issueupdated events to the n8n trigger URL.

  3. Port.io Credentials: Set up the required Port.io API credentials for the 'Extract context from Port' n8n node and the 'Parse Port AI response' n8n node.

  4. GitHub Credentials: Configure the GitHub nodes ('Create a GitHub issue' and 'Assign issue to Copilot') with your GitHub account credentials. Update the repository owner and name parameters within these n8n nodes.

  5. Activate: Save the n8n workflow and set the toggle to 'Active'. Test the flow by moving a Jira ticket that meets the 'In Progress', 'productapproved' criteria.

Node Details

On Jira ticket updated (Jira Trigger n8n trigger):
Function: Starts the n8n workflow when a Jira issue is modified.
Key Configuration: Watches for the jira:issueupdated event.
Is ready for assignment? (If n8n node):
Function: Filters the incoming Jira events, ensuring the ticket is 'In Progress', 'productapproved', and not yet 'copilotassigned'.
Extract context from Port (Port.io n8n node):
Function: Uses an AI model (GPT-5) via Port.io to query the operational catalog and generate the content required for the GitHub issue, enriching it with context.
Key Configuration: operation: generalInvoke, detailed prompt instructing AI to output structured JSON with context.
Create a GitHub issue (GitHub n8n node):
Function: Creates the official GitHub issue using the AI-generated title and body.
Key Configuration: Uses expressions to pull githubissuetitle and githubissuebody from the previous n8n node's output.
Assign issue to Copilot (GitHub n8n node):
Function: Adds a comment to the newly created GitHub issue to trigger Copilot's automated coding process.
Key Configuration: operation: createComment, uses @copilot mention.
Add issue link to Jira ticket (Jira n8n node):
Function: Creates a comment on the original Jira ticket providing traceability to the new GitHub issue.
Mark ticket as assigned (Jira n8n node):
Function: Updates the original Jira ticket's labels by adding copilot
assigned, preventing the n8n workflow from processing it again.
