  • Researchers requiring historical data snapshots of public websites.

  • Users looking for a robust, scheduled n8n trigger solution for web monitoring.

  • Technical users seeking advanced n8n templates integrating scraping, AI, and Notion.

Overview

Manually checking websites for changes is time-consuming and often misses subtle updates. This sophisticated n8n workflow solves this by providing a reliable, automated monitoring system. It leverages the Firecrawl n8n node to retrieve structured content and screenshots of target URLs on a schedule defined by the n8n trigger. The core innovation lies in using the OpenAI n8n node (specifically GPT-5-mini) to compare the current content snapshot against the last saved version, filtering out noise based on user-defined criteria. Only confirmed, meaningful changes are logged to Notion, providing a clean audit trail and instant alerts via Gmail. This scalable n8n automation ensures you never miss a critical website update.

How it Works

The entire process is initiated by the Schedule Trigger n8n node, which defines the frequency of execution.

  1. Define Targets and Criteria: The workflow first defines the list of target URLs and the specific changecriteria (what constitutes a meaningful change) using Set nodes.

  2. Scrape and Snapshot: The list of URLs is split out. For each URL, the Firecrawl n8n node scrapes the full content (in Markdown) and captures a full-page screenshot.

  3. Save Current Snapshot (Notion): The data is saved to a Notion Snapshots database. A custom Code n8n node prepares the scraped content by splitting it into smaller chunks, which are then appended to the new Notion page using the Notion n8n node.

  4. Retrieve Historical Data: The n8n workflow queries the Notion database to find the last saved snapshot and retrieves its associated content blocks.

  5. AI Comparison: The current content, the previous content, and the user-defined criteria are passed to the OpenAI n8n node. Using GPT-5-mini, the AI analyzes the differences and generates a concise summary. If no change is detected, it returns the specific keyword 'NOCHANGE'.

  6. Filter and Report: A subsequent Code n8n node filters out all results containing 'NO_CHANGE'. The remaining items are confirmed updates.

  7. Log Update (Notion): A new page is created in the Notion Updates database. A custom HTTP Request n8n node is then used to construct complex block structures in Notion, displaying side-by-side screenshots (current vs. previous) and the AI-generated summary.

  8. Alert (Gmail): Finally, the Gmail n8n node sends a styled HTML email alert containing the URL, the summary, and the comparison screenshots to the designated recipient. This completes the daily execution of the n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

To deploy this powerful n8n workflow template, follow these steps:

  1. Import the JSON: Copy the provided n8n workflow JSON and paste it into your n8n instance using the 'Import from JSON' option.

  2. Configure Target URLs: Open the Define Target URLs n8n node and update the JSON array with the URLs you wish to monitor.

  3. Set Change Criteria: Open the Define What Matters To You n8n node and set the criteria string that GPT-5-mini should use to evaluate changes (e.g., 'Ignore small typographical errors, focus on price and feature updates').

  4. Credential Setup:

Firecrawl: Set up your Firecrawl API key credentials in the respective n8n node.
OpenAI: Configure your OpenAI API key credentials for the Compare Snapshots n8n node.
Notion: Set up your Notion API key. Ensure you have two databases (Snapshots and Updates) and link their IDs in the relevant Notion n8n node parameters.
Gmail (Optional): Set up OAuth2 credentials for the Send Email Updates n8n node and define the recipient email address.

  1. Activate and Test: Run the n8n workflow manually once to ensure all credentials and database connections are working correctly. Once confirmed, activate the Schedule Trigger n8n trigger.

Node Details

Schedule Trigger (n8n trigger): The starting point of the n8n workflow, set to run periodically (e.g., daily).
Define Target URLs / Define What Matters To You (Set n8n node): Used to initialize the data, defining the monitored URLs and the criteria for AI change detection.
Split Out (n8n node): Essential flow control that processes each URL individually through the rest of the n8n automation.
Scrape Target URLs / Capture Screenshots (Firecrawl n8n node): This key n8n node performs two operations: scraping the website content into Markdown and capturing a full-page screenshot. Key configuration includes defining the target URL using expressions from the preceding Split Out node.
Save Snapshots (Notion n8n node): Creates a new page in the Snapshots database, storing metadata and the current screenshot URL.
Construct Notion Blocks (Code n8n node): Contains custom JavaScript logic to split the potentially large scraped content (Markdown) into chunks (max 1500 chars) to adhere to Notion's block size limit before saving.
Get Last Snapshots / Get Many Blocks (Notion n8n node): Retrieves the page ID and content blocks of the previous day's snapshot for the comparison step.
Combine Website Data (Code n8n node): Merges the current scraped data, current screenshot, previous content, and previous screenshot URL into a single object for AI analysis.
Compare Snapshots (OpenAI n8n node): Uses the gpt-5-mini model with a system prompt that directs it to compare the currentContent and previousContent against the changecriteria and return a summary or 'NOCHANGE'.
Combine Snapshots and AI Analysis (Code n8n node): Filters out items where the AI returned 'NO_CHANGE', ensuring only actionable updates proceed.
Construct Update Pages (HTTP Request n8n node): A crucial step that uses the Notion API directly (instead of the standard Notion n8n node) to create complex block structures, specifically column layouts, allowing for side-by-side display of the current and previous screenshots.
Send Email Updates (Gmail n8n node): Sends a detailed, HTML-formatted email alert summarizing the change and visually comparing the two snapshots. The subject is dynamically generated using data from the n8n workflow.
