Who is this best for?

  • Product managers and teams who collect feedback and ideas in Slack.

  • Organizations seeking to automate idea logging and governance.

  • Technical users looking for practical, real-world examples of n8n templates integrating chat tools with project databases.

  • Anyone needing a custom n8n trigger based on internal team actions.

Overview

Keeping track of fleeting product ideas mentioned during daily chat can be challenging. This robust n8n workflow solves that problem by creating a frictionless bridge between Slack and Notion. When a team member uses a designated Slack slash command (like /idea), the n8n automation instantly captures the input, identifies the user, and logs the details into a specified Notion database.

This system leverages a custom n8n trigger (the Webhook) to initiate the process, ensuring real-time response. The ability to route commands via a Switch n8n node also makes this n8n template highly scalable, allowing you to easily add support for other commands (like /bug or /feedback) without major workflow modifications. The automated confirmation message, which links directly to the new Notion page, encourages users to enrich their submissions, maximizing the value provided by this custom n8n automation.

How it Works

This powerful n8n workflow operates through a sequence of steps initiated by a user action in Slack:

  1. Trigger Initiation: The process starts when a user executes the configured Slack slash command (e.g., /idea). This action sends a payload to the primary n8n trigger, which is an external Webhook n8n node.

  2. Configuration Lookup: The workflow immediately accesses the Set me up n8n node to retrieve static configuration data, primarily the target Notion Database URL.

  3. Command Routing: A Switch n8n node analyzes the incoming Slack payload, specifically checking the body.command. It routes the execution only if the command matches /idea, allowing the workflow to handle multiple potential commands efficiently.

  4. Data Insertion: Following successful routing, the Notion n8n node performs the core action. It creates a new page in the target database, mapping the title to the user's message text ($json.body.text) and logging the Creator based on the Slack username ($json.body.username).

  5. Confirmation and Linkback: The final step involves an HTTP Request n8n node. This node uses the responseurl provided by the initial Webhook n8n trigger to post a temporary, hidden confirmation message back to the Slack user. This message includes the captured idea and, critically, provides a direct link to the newly created Notion page, encouraging immediate detail enrichment. This completes the seamless and automated n8n workflow cycle.

Installation Guide

To install and utilize this n8n workflow, follow these setup steps:

  1. Import the n8n Workflow: Copy the provided JSON and import it directly into your n8n instance using the 'New' -> 'Import from JSON' option.

  2. Slack App Setup (Custom n8n Trigger):

Create a new Slack App in your workspace.
Go to 'OAuth & Permissions' and add the chat:write bot token scope.
Go to 'Slash Commands' and create a new command, using /idea as the command.
Copy the Test or Production URL from the Webhook n8n node and paste it into the Slack Command's 'Request URL' field.

  1. Notion Setup:

Create a Notion database with at least two columns: Name (Title type) and Creator (Text type).
Add your Notion API Credentials to n8n and grant the integration access to the new database.
* In the Set me up n8n node, replace the placeholder URL value with the actual URL of your Notion database.

  1. Activate: Save your credentials, ensure the Webhook n8n node is configured correctly, and activate the n8n workflow.

Node Details

Webhook (n8n trigger)
Function: Acts as the primary n8n trigger, listening for POST requests from the configured Slack Slash Command.
Key Configuration: Path is set to /slack-trigger; receives the data payload sent by Slack.

Set me up (Set n8n node)
Function: Stores the necessary Notion database link so it can be dynamically accessed by later nodes.
Key Configuration: Holds the target Notion URL as a static string value.

Switch (n8n node)
Function: Determines the flow path based on the specific Slack command used (/idea). This allows the n8n workflow to be easily expanded to handle different commands.
Key Configuration: Checks if $json.body.command equals /idea.

Notion (n8n node)
Function: Creates the new page (the idea) within the configured Notion database.
Key Configuration: Retrieves the database ID from the 'Set me up' node. Maps the Notion page Title property to ={{ $json.body.text }} and the Creator property to ={{ $json.body.username }}.

Hidden message to add feature details (HTTP Request n8n node)
Function: Posts a confirmation message back into the Slack channel, utilizing the provided response
url from the initial n8n trigger payload.
* Key Configuration: Uses the dynamic response_url as the endpoint and sends a POST body containing the confirmation text and the direct link to the new Notion page.
