Overview

Manual competitive backlink research is slow and often blocked by sophisticated anti-bot systems. This robust n8n workflow bypasses these limitations by integrating a powerful AI Agent configured with Bright Data’s Monitoring and Collector Platform (MCP). The purpose of this specific n8n workflow is to input a competitor domain, execute a deep scrape to extract backlink data (title, URL, date, category), structure the messy raw output using an OpenAI large language model (LLM), and reliably append the clean data to Google Sheets.

By leveraging this pre-built n8n template, users gain a repeatable, automated process for competitor intelligence. Every part of the process, from the initial n8n trigger to the final data insertion, is managed within a single, efficient n8n automation.

How it Works

This n8n workflow begins when the initial n8n trigger, the Manual Execute n8n node, is activated.

  1. Define Input: The workflow first runs through the 'Set: Competitor Domain' n8n node, where the target URL (e.g., ahrefs.com) is defined. This allows the subsequent scraping agent to dynamically know which domain to target.

  2. AI-Powered Scraping: The core logic resides in the 'Agent: Scrape Backlinks' n8n node. This LangChain Agent takes the URL input and uses the Bright Data MCP Client n8n node and the OpenAI Chat Model to perform intelligent web scraping. This step extracts the raw backlink data, handling anti-bot measures and complex parsing.

  3. Data Structuring: The scraped output, which might be messy or semi-structured, is fed through the 'Auto-fixing Output Parser' and 'Structured Output Parser' n8n nodes. This ensures the output is guaranteed to be clean JSON, ready for structured processing. The OpenAI n8n node assists in this cleansing process.

  4. Item Splitting: The 'Function: Split Backlinks' n8n node is crucial. Since the previous step returns a single item containing an array of all backlinks, this custom code n8n node iterates through the array and creates a separate n8n item for every single backlink. This preparation is necessary for bulk insertion into Google Sheets.

  5. Storage: Finally, the 'Google Sheets: Append Backlinks' n8n node takes each individual backlink item and appends it as a new row in the specified Google Sheet, completing the automated n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

To use this n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided JSON code and import it directly into your self-hosted or cloud n8n instance as a new n8n workflow.

  2. Set Credentials: You will need to set up credentials for four services:

OpenAI API Key: Configure the 'OpenAi account' credential for the 'OpenAI Chat Model' n8n node (used by the Agent).
MCP Client API Key: Configure the 'MCP Client (STDIO) account' credential to connect to your Bright Data services.
* Google Sheets OAuth2: Configure the 'Google Sheets account' credential to grant the n8n node access to your Google Drive and Sheets.

  1. Configure Input: In the 'Set: Competitor Domain' n8n node, replace the default URL (https://ahrefs.com/) with the competitor domain you wish to analyze.

  2. Configure Sheet: In the 'Google Sheets: Append Backlinks' n8n node, select the correct Document ID and Sheet Name where you want the backlink data to be stored.

  3. Test: Click the 'Execute Workflow' button associated with the 'Trigger: Manual Execute' n8n trigger to test the entire data pipeline.

Node Details

Trigger: Manual Execute (n8n trigger): The starting point of this specific n8n workflow, used for initiating the process on demand.
Set: Competitor Domain (n8n node): A utility node defining the variable url which holds the target competitor domain for the scraping agent. Key configuration is the defined value: https://ahrefs.com/.
Agent: Scrape Backlinks (Bright Data MCP): The central processing n8n node. It orchestrates the scraping by calling the Bright Data MCP Client tool and using the OpenAI Chat Model (GPT-4o-mini) to intelligently extract backlink data based on the instruction: extract any backlinks available from the following url: {{ $json.url }}. This is a powerful n8n node combining LLM and tool use.
OpenAI Chat Model (n8n node): Supplies the LLM capabilities (GPT-4o-mini) necessary for the LangChain Agent to understand instructions, decide on tool usage, and assist in dynamic parsing.
MCP Client (n8n node): Executes the specialized Bright Data tool (scrapeasmarkdown) to retrieve the raw data from the competitor site.
Function: Split Backlinks (n8n node): A custom JavaScript n8n node designed to transform the single output item (containing an array of backlinks) into multiple individual items, ensuring each backlink can be mapped to a separate row in the final sheet.

  • Google Sheets: Append Backlinks (n8n node): The final action. This n8n node takes the individual backlink items and performs an append operation, writing five columns of data (URL, date, title, domain, category) into the target spreadsheet.
