Anyone interested in powerful, context-aware n8n templates for data analysis.

Overview

Navigating large Trello boards for quick answers—like ‘What tasks are overdue?’ or ‘Summarize everything in the backlog’—can be time-consuming. This powerful n8n workflow transforms your Trello board data into a comprehensive text context.

By leveraging the OpenAI LangChain agent within n8n, the system reads all board data (cards, lists, descriptions, due dates) and allows you to ask complex, natural-language questions. This specific n8n template saves significant time during stand-ups and planning sessions, providing precise, AI-generated summaries based on live data.

How it Works

This automation initiates using a specialized LangChain n8n trigger, the When chat message received n8n node, which listens for user input (the query).

  1. Data Extraction: The n8n workflow immediately branches to pull project data. It first uses the Trello n8n node to Get Board details (using a specific URL) and then sequentially retrieves Get Lists and Get Cards associated with that board. This ensures the full context is available.

  2. Data Preparation: The Map Fields3 n8n node standardizes the Trello card data, extracting crucial fields like Board Name, List Name, Task Name, and badges.due into a consistent format.

  3. Aggregation: The Combine into One1 n8n node aggregates all individual card items into a single, massive JSON object, creating the full Trello context payload.

  4. Context Merging: The Merge With Chat n8n node combines the newly aggregated Trello data with the original chat input received from the n8n trigger.

  5. AI Analysis: The Trello Chatbot (LangChain Agent) n8n node receives both the user's query and the extensive Trello data dump. It utilizes the attached OpenAI Chat Model1 and Simple Memory n8n node (for conversation history) to reason over the data and generate a relevant, accurate natural language response.

Installation Guide

To set up this advanced n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided JSON into your n8n instance using the 'New' > 'Import from JSON' option.

  2. Trello Credentials: Obtain your Trello API Key and Token from the Trello Developer API page. Create a new Trello API credential in n8n and input these details. Assign this credential to the Get Board3, Get Lists3, and Get Cards3 n8n nodes.

  3. Trello Board Configuration: Open the Get Board3 Trello n8n node and paste the URL of the Trello board you wish to query into the ID field (ensuring the mode is set to URL).

  4. OpenAI Credentials: Obtain an API key from the OpenAI Platform and ensure you have billing enabled. Create a new OpenAI credential in n8n and link it to the OpenAI Chat Model1 n8n node.

  5. Activation: The workflow uses a chat trigger. Run the n8n workflow and interact with the exposed chat endpoint to test the AI querying capability.

Node Details

This n8n workflow relies on several specific n8n node types to function:

When chat message received (LangChain Trigger n8n trigger): The starting point. It initializes the workflow upon receiving a message, capturing the user's natural language query.
Get Board3, Get Lists3, Get Cards3 (Trello n8n node): These sequential nodes handle the connection to Trello, extracting hierarchical data necessary for the AI's context. Get Board3 is configured with the specific board URL.
Map Fields3 (Set n8n node): Used to transform and standardize complex nested Trello card data into an easily digestible structure, crucial before passing it to the language model.
Combine into One1 (Aggregate n8n node): Essential for compiling all individual data items (cards) into a single large text string/JSON object, serving as the knowledge base for the AI.
Trello Chatbot (LangChain Agent n8n node): This is the core reasoning engine. It takes the combined Trello context and the user query to determine the required response. The prompt instructs it to 'Summarize this board'.
OpenAI Chat Model1 (LangChain n8n node): Provides the underlying language processing power (like GPT-4 or similar) that the Agent uses to analyze the Trello context and formulate an answer.

  • Simple Memory (LangChain Memory n8n node): Maintains the conversational history for multi-turn questions.
