Overview

Dirty data is a major hindrance to successful operations. This advanced n8n workflow solves the problem of unstructured and non-standardized CSV uploads by providing a dedicated cleaning pipeline. This n8n template utilizes several powerful Code n8n node instances to perform robust data transformations, including email validation, phone number normalization, and data quality scoring, ensuring only the highest quality rows proceed. By implementing this n8n workflow, businesses can ensure that data imported into key systems like Google Sheets is consistently clean, saving manual effort and reducing errors. The final output is automatically saved as a new CSV file to Google Drive and appended to a target Google Sheet, demonstrating a highly effective multi-action n8n automation.

How it Works

This n8n workflow initiates when an external service sends a CSV file to a public webhook URL:

  1. Webhook n8n trigger: The process starts when the 'CSV Upload Webhook' receives an HTTP POST request containing the CSV data (either as binary form-data or base64 encoded payload).

  2. Extraction (Code n8n node): The 'Extract CSV Content' n8n node extracts the raw CSV text and associated metadata (filename, size, initial row count) from the incoming request.

  3. Parsing (Code n8n node): The 'Parse CSV Data' n8n node converts the raw CSV string into a structured JSON array, standardizing column headers to be machine-readable (lowercase/snake_case).

  4. Cleaning and Standardization (Code n8n node): The core logic is executed here. The 'Clean & Standardize Data' n8n node applies custom JavaScript rules to standardize formats (e.g., stripping non-digits from phone numbers, lowercasing and validating emails, proper casing names). It then filters the data, retaining only high-quality rows.

  5. CSV Regeneration (Code n8n node): The 'Generate Clean CSV' n8n node takes the cleaned JSON array and reconstructs a brand-new, standardized CSV file, providing both the raw content and a new binary object for file operations.

  6. Parallel Storage: The flow splits, simultaneously performing two actions:

Google Drive: The new clean CSV file is uploaded and saved to the configured Google Drive location.
Google Sheets: The workflow clears the target sheet ('Clear Existing Sheet' n8n node), prepares the JSON objects for row-based input ('Prepare for Sheets' n8n node), and uses the 'Import to Google Sheets' n8n node to append all clean rows to the sheet.

Installation Guide

To deploy this powerful n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the entire JSON code provided and import it directly into your n8n instance.

  2. Webhook Setup: Activate the 'CSV Upload Webhook' n8n trigger node. Note the unique URL provided by n8n. This URL is where you must send your CSV data (via POST request, either base64 or form-data).

  3. Google Sheets Credentials: Edit the 'Clear Existing Sheet' and 'Import to Google Sheets' n8n node configurations.

Connect your Google Sheets OAuth 2 credentials.
Replace the placeholder YOURGOOGLESHEET_ID with the actual ID of the Google Sheet you intend to populate.

  1. Google Drive Credentials (Optional): If you plan to use the file saving feature, configure the 'Save to Google Drive' n8n node with your Google Drive credentials and specify the target folder ID.

  2. Customization: Review the Code n8n node instances. If your CSV schema or cleaning rules differ, modify the JavaScript within the 'Clean & Standardize Data' n8n node to fit your exact requirements. This n8n template is designed for easy customization of cleaning logic.

Node Details

The core of this n8n workflow relies on a mix of base triggers and utility nodes:

CSV Upload Webhook (n8n trigger): Sets the automation in motion upon receiving a POST request to the /csv-upload path. Key setting: httpMethod: POST.
Extract CSV Content (Code n8n node): Handles decoding and validation of the incoming CSV file, supporting binary and base64 formats. Essential for setting up file metadata.
Parse CSV Data (Code n8n node): Transforms unstructured CSV text into iterable JSON rows, making subsequent cleaning possible within the n8n environment.
Clean & Standardize Data (Code n8n node): Contains the primary standardization logic (phone, email, name cleaning) and implements a filtering mechanism based on a calculated data quality score (must be >= 30).
Generate Clean CSV (Code n8n node): Reverses the parsing process, taking the cleaned JSON objects and outputting a new CSV file in a binary format, ready for file upload actions in the downstream n8n node connections.
Clear Existing Sheet (Google Sheets n8n node): Ensures idempotent execution by clearing the target sheet before importing new data. Configured to operate on Sheet1.
Import to Google Sheets (Google Sheets n8n node): Appends the cleaned, standardized data rows to the specified Google Sheet document, leveraging the robust capabilities of this n8n node.
Save to Google Drive (Google Drive n8n node): Uploads the newly generated clean CSV file, utilizing the binary output from the preceding Code n8n node. File name is dynamically generated.
