Overview

This sophisticated n8n workflow, often referred to as a 'RedOps' module, is meticulously designed to automate the strenuous process of validating email security gateways (ESGs). By leveraging the powerful OpenAI n8n node, the automation dynamically generates customized, technical payloads that are then ready for testing against target infrastructure. The core value of this n8n template lies in its ability to rapidly pull a list of targets from Google Sheets, facilitate unique test case creation via AI, and ensure accurate, structured logging of the outcomes back to another Sheet. This guarantees security assessments are scalable and efficient, proving the immense utility of n8n in highly specialized technical fields.

How it Works

  1. Start and Fetch: The n8n workflow begins execution using the Manual n8n trigger node (labeled "Trigger Test Batch"), prompting the system to run.

  2. Target Acquisition: The "Get Targets" Google Sheets n8n node reads a list of validation targets (e.g., recipient emails, testing identifiers) from a specified spreadsheet.

  3. Preparation and Split: The "Generate Payload" set n8n node prepares the target data for subsequent steps and splits the flow. One branch sends the target metadata to the AI generation process, while the other holds the original context.

  4. AI Payload Generation: The OpenAI n8n node utilizes GPT capabilities to generate the desired security test payload content based on the input from the previous n8n node.

  5. Data Integration: The generated payload is received and processed by the "Add Email" n8n node, combining the new AI-generated content with the necessary target metadata.

  6. Context Merging: The crucial "Merge" n8n node recombines the original target list (held via the initial split) with the AI-enriched, generated payload data, ensuring that all context is maintained before logging.

  7. Final Formatting: The "Edit Fields" set n8n node standardizes and cleans the output fields to prepare for consistent data entry.

  8. Logging Results: The final Google Sheets n8n node, "Validated," writes the complete testing record—including the target email, the generated payload, and the validation status—back to a designated results sheet, finalizing this specialized n8n workflow run.

Installation Guide

  1. Import the n8n Workflow: Copy the provided JSON code. In your n8n instance, go to 'Workflows', select 'Import from JSON', and paste the code.

  2. Google Sheets Configuration: You must set up Google Sheets credentials for the "Get Targets" and "Validated" n8n node instances. Ensure these credentials have appropriate read/write access to your source and results spreadsheets.

  3. OpenAI Credential Setup: Configure the OpenAI API Key credential for the "OpenAI" n8n node. This is mandatory for the n8n workflow to generate the necessary security payloads.

  4. Parameter Review: Adjust the Spreadsheet ID and sheet names in both Google Sheets n8n node configurations to align with your testing environment. Also, review the prompt settings within the OpenAI n8n node to fine-tune the nature of the security payload being generated.

  5. Execution: Activate the entire n8n workflow and run the Manual n8n trigger node to begin the automated testing batch.

Node Details

Trigger Test Batch (manualTrigger n8n node): Acts as the starting mechanism or n8n trigger to manually initiate this specific security testing n8n workflow run.
Get Targets (googleSheets n8n node): The initial data input n8n node. Function: Fetches the required list of targets (emails/parameters) from the source spreadsheet. Key Configuration: Read operation, specified Sheet ID.
Generate Payload (set n8n node): Function: Prepares data and splits the flow path, ensuring the original context is saved for merging.
OpenAI (openAi n8n node): Function: The core AI engine that generates the highly specific, customized test payloads for security assessment using the GPT model. Key Configuration: LangChain integration settings, specific prompt injection.
Merge (merge n8n node): Function: A crucial core logic n8n node used to join the initial target list context with the data enriched by the AI generation process, guaranteeing a complete output item for logging.
Validated (googleSheets n8n node): Function: The final output n8n node that logs the complete result set—including targets, status, and the generated payload—to a results spreadsheet. Key Configuration: Append/Write operation.
