  • Users looking for advanced examples of local file processing and custom code within an n8n workflow.

Overview

Ensuring compliance in large CAD and BIM projects (Revit, IFC, DWG, DGN) often requires manual data extraction and comparison against established standards. This complex n8n workflow solves this by automating the entire validation pipeline. It first uses an external application (via the Execute Command n8n node) to convert the source BIM file into a standardized Excel format. It then employs powerful Python scripting within an n8n node to compare this project data against an Excel sheet defining required parameters. The result is a color-coded validation report saved locally, highlighting compliance (Green) or missing data (Red). This is a robust example of utilizing custom code, local file operations, and flow control within an n8n environment.

How it Works

  1. Start and Setup: The Manual n8n trigger starts the process. An initial Set n8n node defines critical local file paths: the path to the BIM project file and the path to the required external conversion tool (RvtExporter.exe).

  2. Conversion Check: The n8n workflow generates the expected Excel output filename and uses a Read Binary File n8n node with continueOnFail: true to check if the converted data already exists.

  3. Extraction/Conversion: An If n8n node directs the flow: if the Excel file does not exist, the Extract - Run converter n8n node executes the external conversion command. Error handling logic checks if the extraction succeeded.

  4. Data Acquisition: Once the path to the project data Excel file (xlsx_filename) is confirmed, the flow synchronizes using a Merge n8n node. It sets the path to the validation rules file and uses two separate Read Binary File n8n nodes to load both the project data and the validation standards spreadsheet into the n8n memory as binary data.

  5. Data Validation (Python Logic): The two binary streams are merged and passed to the Validate - Enhanced Python n8n node. This custom code uses pandas and openpyxl to perform complex structural validation. It calculates data fill percentages and unique value counts, then annotates the original validation rules spreadsheet with results and color-coding (Green/Red).

  6. Reporting and Opening: The Save Validation Report n8n node writes the generated, timestamped Excel file back to the local disk. Finally, the Open Excel Report n8n node executes a local system command (start) to automatically open the report for immediate user review. This specialized n8n workflow completes the loop from source file to validated report.

Installation Guide

This n8n workflow requires access to the local file system and external executables, making it suitable for self-hosted or desktop n8n instances.

  1. Import: Import this n8n templates JSON code into your n8n instance.

  2. External Tool: Ensure the required BIM conversion executable (e.g., RvtExporter.exe) is installed and accessible on the machine running the n8n process.

  3. Configuration: Open the Setup - Define file paths n8n node and the Set Validation Rules Path n8n node. Update the hardcoded local paths to match your environment for:

pathtoconverter (The executable path)
projectfile (The path to your BIM model, e.g., .rvt)
* validation
rules_path (The path to your standards Excel file)

  1. Troubleshooting Python: A sticky note within this n8n workflow warns that some n8n versions may block the os module used by the Python Code node (Pyodide). If you encounter errors, consider running n8n version 1.97 as suggested in the workflow notes to ensure compatibility for the custom code component.

  2. Execution: Click the Start - Click to begin n8n trigger to run the validation process.

Node Details

Manual Trigger (Start - Click to begin): The starting n8n trigger point for manually running this desktop-focused automation.
Set (Setup - Define file paths): Crucial n8n node for configuring the fixed local paths for the external executable and the BIM project file.
Execute Command (Extract - Run converter): This n8n node executes the external command-line tool (RvtExporter.exe) to perform the essential BIM data extraction.
If (If - File exists?): A core flow control n8n node that determines whether the conversion step needs to be run or if it can be skipped, optimizing the n8n workflow efficiency.
Read Binary File (Read Project Excel File / Read Validation Rules File): These n8n nodes efficiently load the two necessary Excel files (project data and validation standards) into memory for subsequent data processing.
Code (Validate - Enhanced): The primary processing n8n node. This Python script performs complex data analysis, filtering, calculation, and in-memory modification of the Excel spreadsheet using pandas and openpyxl.
Write Binary File (Save Validation Report1): Saves the generated, timestamped validation Excel report binary data back to the specified local path on the file system.
Execute Command (Open Excel Report1): Executes the local command to automatically open the generated report using the default system application, finalizing the n8n automation action.
