Overview

Manually breaking down extensive documentation into digestible, pedagogically sound micro-learning modules is time-consuming. This robust n8n workflow solves this by utilizing the cutting-edge capabilities of GPT-4, ensuring consistency and accuracy across all generated content.

The automation starts with an n8n trigger (a webhook) and uses advanced custom code (the Chunker n8n node) to intelligently divide large inputs into topic-based segments. Each segment is then processed by the OpenAI n8n node to generate structured, 2-3 minute learning units, complete with key concepts, examples, and quizzes. The final output is automatically formatted into a professional Google Doc and instantly distributed via Slack notifications. This n8n workflow is one of the most powerful n8n templates available for L&D professionals.

How it Works

This comprehensive n8n workflow executes in several distinct phases:

  1. Start and Validate: The process is initiated by an HTTP request sent to the Content Input n8n trigger. The Validate Content n8n node checks if the payload contains content. If validation fails, an Error Response is sent back.

  2. Smart Chunking: Valid content passes to the Chunker n8n node, a custom code node designed to break large documents into logical, topic-based sections (up to 4000 characters). This ensures that the AI receives contextually rich, complete units rather than arbitrary text cuts.

  3. AI Transformation: The AI Content Analyzer n8n node (using GPT-4) analyzes each content chunk. It follows a detailed system prompt to produce a strict JSON array of micro-learning modules, ensuring each module includes specific elements like a practical example and a quick quiz question.

  4. Module Merging and Formatting: The Format_Output n8n node gathers the JSON output from all chunks, deduplicates modules, adds course metadata (like course ID and total time), and generates pre-formatted text optimized for different channels (Slack, Email, Mobile).

  5. Parallel Distribution: The Split Out n8n node separates the course metadata from the individual modules. In parallel:

The Slack Course Details and Slack Modules n8n node send immediate notifications about the new course structure and individual module previews.
The Google Formatter n8n node converts the structured module data into a professionally formatted text string suitable for a document.

  1. Google Docs Creation: A Create a document Google Docs n8n node makes a new document, and the Update a document Google Docs n8n node inserts the full, formatted course content generated earlier, finalizing the documentation.

Installation Guide

To deploy this powerful n8n workflow template, follow these steps:

  1. Import the n8n workflow: Copy the provided JSON data and paste it directly into your n8n instance via the 'New' menu > 'Import from JSON'.

  2. OpenAI Credentials: Locate the AI Content Analyzer n8n node. Click on 'Credentials' and configure your OpenAI API Key credentials. The workflow is set to use GPT-4, requiring an account with access to this model.

  3. Google Docs Credentials: Update the credentials for the Create a document and Update a document n8n nodes. You will need to authenticate a Google account with access to the target Google Drive folder specified in the node configuration.

  4. Slack Setup (Optional): If you wish to use the Slack notification features, update the Slack Modules and Slack Course Details n8n nodes with your Slack API credentials and select the desired Channel ID.

  5. Activate the n8n trigger: The Content Input n8n trigger is a webhook. Save the workflow and activate it. Copy the resulting webhook URL to use as the endpoint for submitting your long-form content (via a POST request with a JSON body containing a content field).

Node Details

Content Input (Webhook n8n trigger): The starting point of the n8n workflow. It listens for a POST request on the path /micro-learning-v2 containing the content to be analyzed.
Chunker (Code n8n node): Essential custom scripting logic that performs 'Topic-Based Document Chunking.' This n8n node analyzes header patterns and structure to break large documents into smaller, contextually relevant pieces for efficient AI processing.
AI Content Analyzer (OpenAI n8n node): Uses the gpt-4.1 model (as defined in the parameters) to execute the core logic. It transforms unstructured text chunks into a standardized JSON array containing title, explanation, and quickquizquestion fields.
Format_Output (Code n8n node): This crucial n8n node cleans the AI's output, merges all individual module results, performs deduplication, generates course-level metadata, and pre-renders multi-channel formats (email, Slack, mobile).
Google Formatter (Code n8n node): Specifically formats the course data into a long, readable string, adding professional document structures, overview sections, and module headers, ready for insertion into Google Docs.
Create a document / Update a document (Google Docs n8n node): These nodes manage the final content storage. The first creates an empty document, and the second updates that document using the content processed by the Google Formatter n8n node.

  • Slack Modules / Slack Course Details (Slack n8n node): Responsible for real-time reporting, sending a summary of the newly created course and detailed notifications for each individual micro-learning module to a designated channel.
