Overview

Generating a spontaneous meeting link often requires switching context, opening a calendar, and creating an event, even if temporary. This n8n workflow eliminates that friction entirely.

By leveraging a simple Slack slash command (e.g., /meet), this automation instantly executes a sequence: it triggers the n8n trigger webhook, creates a short Google Calendar event specifically to obtain the Google Meet link, sends that link back to the Slack channel, and then cleans up by immediately deleting the temporary calendar event. This n8n node structure ensures efficiency and minimizes calendar clutter, providing a seamless experience and demonstrating the power of smart n8n automation.

How it Works

This n8n workflow operates entirely on command, initiated by a custom Slack Slash Command acting as the n8n trigger.

  1. Slack Command Execution: A user types /meet in any Slack channel, which sends a POST request to the configured n8n Webhook.

  2. Webhook Trigger: The Webhook n8n node receives the request, capturing crucial context like the channelid and ensuring the n8n workflow proceeds.

  3. Google Meet Generation: The "Create event with google meet link" Google Calendar n8n node creates a temporary 15-minute event. Critically, it requests a hangoutsMeet conference solution, forcing Google to generate and attach a unique Google Meet URL.

  4. Link Distribution: The "Send msg with Google meet link" Slack n8n node extracts the newly generated hangoutLink using an expression ({{ $('Create event with google meet link').item.json.hangoutLink }}) and posts the join link back into the originating Slack channel, identified by the dynamic channelid captured by the n8n trigger.

  5. Cleanup: Finally, the "Delete temporary calendar event" Google Calendar n8n node uses the unique event ID created in step 3 to delete the temporary calendar entry, ensuring your calendar remains clean while still providing the instant meeting link. This full cycle showcases effective use of multiple n8n nodes within a single, efficient n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

To deploy this n8n workflow, you must configure both a Slack App and Google Calendar credentials.

1. n8n Setup & Webhook URL

  1. Import this n8n templates JSON into your n8n instance.

  2. Activate the Webhook n8n trigger node to generate a Production Webhook URL.

  3. Copy this URL (it should contain the path /slack-meet-trigger).

2. Slack App Configuration

  1. Visit the Slack API portal and create a new Slack App for your workspace.

  2. Under OAuth & Permissions, add the necessary Bot Token Scopes:

chat:write
chat:write.public

  1. Under Slash Commands, create a new command:

Command: /meet
Request URL: Paste the Production Webhook URL copied from your n8n trigger node.

  1. Install the app to your workspace.

  2. Configure the Send msg with Google meet link Slack n8n node with your Slack account credentials.

3. Google Calendar Configuration

  1. Set up Google OAuth 2.0 credentials for n8n, ensuring they have access to Google Calendar. Consult the n8n documentation for the single-service setup.

  2. In both the "Create event with google meet link" n8n node and the "Delete temporary calendar event" n8n node, select the desired calendar (typically your primary calendar) using your newly created Google credentials.

Node Details

This n8n workflow utilizes four key n8n nodes to achieve the automation:

Webhook (n8n trigger)
Function: Acts as the initial n8n trigger, listening for the POST request sent by the Slack slash command.
Key Configuration: Method is set to POST, and the path is configured as slack-meet-trigger.

Google Calendar: Create event with google meet link
Function: Creates a temporary calendar event whose sole purpose is to generate a hangoutsMeet URL.
Key Configuration: The event duration is set to 15 minutes (start: ={{ $now }} and end: ={{ $now.plus({minutes: 15}) }}). The conferenceSolution is explicitly set to hangoutsMeet.

Slack: Send msg with Google meet link
Function: Sends the generated meeting link back to the originating Slack channel.
Key Configuration: The channel ID is dynamically pulled from the incoming webhook payload (={{ $('Webhook').item.json.body.channel_id }}). The message text uses an expression to insert the link: {{ $('Create event with google meet link').item.json.hangoutLink }}.

Google Calendar: Delete temporary calendar event
Function: Cleans up the calendar by deleting the event that was created just moments before.
Key Configuration: The operation is set to delete. It references the ID of the previously created event using an expression: ={{ $('Create event with google meet link').item.json["id"] }}.
