Who is this best for?

  • Emergency Management Officials: Needing immediate, summarized situational awareness.

  • Journalists/Reporters: Who require real-time alerts on significant local events.

  • Technical Users & Developers: Seeking an advanced n8n template demonstrating complex decryption, state management within an n8n node, and AI integration.

  • Community Watch Groups: Who need to monitor local fire and medical activity efficiently.

Overview

Keeping track of real-time emergency incidents from services like PulsePoint often requires manually refreshing data or dealing with cryptic codes. This advanced n8n workflow solves this by automating the entire process. It uses a custom Code n8n node to fetch, decrypt, and filter raw incident data, ensuring only new events are processed. The data is then fed to an AI Agent powered by OpenAI, which translates technical dispatch details into a concise, human-readable summary, complete with relevant context, units, and status updates. This powerful combination turns complex, encrypted feeds into actionable, immediate SMS or iMessage alerts via the Blooio service. This specific n8n workflow provides critical, low-latency awareness without needing constant manual monitoring.

How it Works

The entire process is controlled by an n8n trigger running on a scheduled interval (e.g., every 60 minutes).

  1. Scheduled Execution: The n8n workflow is initiated by the Schedule Trigger.

  2. Data Acquisition and Decryption: The crucial 'Get alerts' Code n8n node performs three key tasks: 1) It fetches the encrypted data from the PulsePoint API; 2) It executes a complex JavaScript script using crypto and a specific password derivation method to decrypt the data (AES-256-CBC); 3) It uses n8n's static data feature to store and check seenIncidentIDs, ensuring only genuine new incidents proceed, preventing duplicate notifications. It also translates incident codes (like 'SF' for Structural Fire) into plain text.

  3. Data Merging: The 'Merge all' Code n8n node aggregates the newly filtered incidents into a single JSON object, preparing the context for the AI.

  4. Filtering New Incidents: An If n8n node checks if any new incidents were found (array length > 0). If not, the execution stops.

  5. AI Summarization: The 'AI Agent' n8n node, configured with a focused system message, takes the raw incident data and uses the connected OpenAI Chat Model to generate a brief, emoji-rich, comprehensive briefing tailored for mobile viewing.

  6. Notification Delivery: Finally, the 'Send Message' HTTP Request n8n node connects to the Blooio API using HTTP Bearer Authentication, sending the summarized output ({{ $json.output }}) as a real-time message (SMS/iMessage) to the configured identifier.

Installation Guide

To deploy this powerful n8n workflow template, follow these steps:

  1. Import the n8n Workflow: Copy the provided JSON code and paste it into your n8n instance using the 'New' -> 'Import from JSON' function.

  2. OpenAI Credential Setup:

Click on the 'OpenAI Chat Model' n8n node.
Set up a new credential using your OpenAI API key.

  1. Blooio Credential Setup:

Click on the 'Send Message' n8n node (HTTP Request).
Set up a new HTTP Bearer Auth credential using your Blooio API token.

  1. Configure Messaging Parameters:

* In the 'Send Message' n8n node, update the identifier body parameter to your target phone number (e.g., +1234567890).

  1. Review the 'Get alerts' n8n node: This node currently uses a specific agency ID (agencyid=19100). If you are monitoring a different jurisdiction, you must locate and update the agency ID within the JavaScript code to match your area's PulsePoint data source.

  2. Activate the n8n Trigger: Ensure the 'Schedule Trigger' is set to your desired frequency (default is every 60 minutes). Test the n8n workflow using the 'Manual Trigger' first.

Node Details

  • Schedule Trigger:

- Function: The primary n8n trigger that executes the automation every hour.
- Key Configuration: Runs on a 60-minute interval.

  • Get alerts (Code n8n node):

- Function: This is the core logic. It fetches, decrypts (using AES-256-CBC), filters for new incidents based on previously stored IDs (workflow static data), and formats the output into structured JSON.
- Key Configuration: Uses node-fetch and crypto modules. Implements state management to only pass new alerts downstream.

  • Merge all (Code n8n node):

- Function: Aggregates all incoming incident items into a single parent array, which is necessary for effective context input into the AI Agent n8n node.

  • If (n8n node):

- Function: Flow control. Checks if the length of the incidents array is greater than zero. Only proceeds if new alerts are present.

  • AI Agent (n8n node):

- Function: Orchestrates the summarization task. Takes the raw data as input and applies a directive to generate a brief, professional emergency report.
- Key Configuration: Uses a detailed systemMessage prompt focused solely on concise briefing with emojis.

  • OpenAI Chat Model (n8n node):

- Function: Provides the language processing capabilities for the AI Agent. Configured to use an efficient OpenAI model (e.g., 'o4-mini' or similar).

  • Send Message (HTTP Request n8n node):

- Function: Delivers the final, AI-summarized briefing to the user's messaging device.
- Key Configuration: URL: https://api.blooio.com/send-message. Method: POST. Uses HTTP Bearer Authentication and sends the summarized text in the message body.
