Overview

This comprehensive n8n workflow is designed for content marketers, SEO specialists, and technical writers who need to create high-quality, data-backed content outlines quickly. Manually analyzing competitors' top-ranking articles is time-consuming. This n8n workflow automates competitive analysis by taking a target keyword, querying the top five results using SerpAPI, intelligently scraping the successful pages, and feeding the combined, cleaned content (up to three articles) to a GPT-4o language model.

The AI n8n node, acting as an SEO strategist, generates a MECE (Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive) structure, ensuring your new article covers all necessary subtopics identified in the top-ranking content. This powerful n8n automation provides a foundation for creating content that is highly relevant and likely to rank well, saving hours of manual research time. Deploying this n8n templates means instant access to sophisticated content generation.

How it Works

This n8n workflow operates in a logical, multi-stage pipeline, beginning with an input and concluding with a structured output.

  1. Trigger and Search: The n8n workflow starts with the On form submission n8n trigger, capturing the target keyword. It immediately passes this keyword to the Get search results n8n node, which uses the SerpAPI credential to query Google, deliberately excluding low-quality sources like Quora or Reddit.

  2. URL Preparation: The Extract URLs from JSON n8n node pulls the top 5 organic result URLs along with the input keyword. The Split out URLs n8n node then breaks this list into individual items, preparing them for simultaneous scraping.

  3. Content Scraping: The Scrape Content n8n node attempts to retrieve the HTML for all URLs. It is configured to continue despite errors, anticipating potential anti-scraping measures or dead links. The Limit n8n node ensures that only the first three successfully scraped articles proceed, optimizing the token count for the subsequent AI step.

  4. Cleanup and Consolidation: The Extract body content n8n node isolates the main content, stripping unnecessary scripts and styling. The Clean up Text n8n node converts this remaining HTML into clean Markdown. Finally, the Put all articles into one item n8n node aggregates the cleaned Markdown content from the three articles into a single item list, ready for AI analysis.

  5. AI Outline Generation: The Create outline n8n node, utilizing the OpenAI credential (GPT-4o), processes the keyword and the three source articles. It uses a highly specific system prompt to analyze recurring themes and generate a MECE-structured, SEO-optimized outline, strictly based on the input data. This core n8n node is where the value is created.

  6. Final Output: The resulting outline is passed to the final placeholder n8n node, ready for subsequent actions, such as saving to a database or triggering a content writing sequence.

Installation Guide

To utilize this highly effective n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import the n8n Workflow: Copy the provided JSON code and paste it into your n8n instance using the 'New' menu > 'Import from JSON'.

  2. SerpAPI Credential Setup: This n8n templates requires external search data. You must sign up for a SerpAPI account and create a corresponding SerpAPI credential within n8n.

  3. OpenAI Credential Setup: The Create outline n8n node uses GPT-4o. You need an active OpenAI API key linked to an n8n credential.

  4. Activate the n8n Trigger: Ensure the On form submission n8n trigger node is active. When you run the n8n workflow, a form will pop up asking for the keyword.

  5. Test Execution: Execute the n8n workflow manually by entering a target keyword to verify all scraping, cleaning, and AI processes run without errors. This powerful n8n automation will deliver the structured outline in the final n8n node.

Node Details

This n8n workflow relies on several specialized n8n node types to manage search, scraping, and AI analysis:

On form submission (n8n trigger):
Function: Serves as the starting point and user interface, accepting the Keyword input.
Key Configuration: Configured to prompt the user for the SEO target keyword.
Get search results (HTTP Request n8n node):
Function: Executes the Google search via the SerpAPI endpoint.
Key Configuration: Uses a query parameter q which includes the input keyword plus exclusions (-inurl:reddit.com -inurl:quora.com) to filter results.
Scrape Content (HTTP Request n8n node):
Function: Downloads the raw HTML content of the top URLs.
Key Configuration: Includes onError: continueErrorOutput to handle failed requests gracefully, ensuring the n8n workflow doesn't stop if a few sites block scraping.
Limit (n8n node):
Function: Restricts the flow to the first three successfully scraped items, maximizing token efficiency for the AI model.
Key Configuration: Max Items set to 3.
Clean up Text (Markdown n8n node):
Function: Converts the extracted HTML body into clean, lightweight Markdown format.
Key Configuration: Reduces token usage by eliminating HTML tags before sending the data to the LLM.
Create outline (LangChain OpenAI n8n node):
Function: The central AI processing step, generating the final SEO outline.
Key Configuration: Uses gpt-4o and a detailed system prompt instructing the AI to perform competitor analysis and generate a MECE-compliant outline based strictly on the three source articles. This complex n8n node is the heart of the automation.
