Anyone interested in mastering the HTTP Request n8n node for token management in n8n.

Overview

Enterprises often require secure, automated access to SharePoint data without relying on manual login sessions. This specific n8n workflow provides a robust solution by implementing the OAuth 2.0 Client Credentials flow directly within n8n. Instead of using a dedicated integration, this n8n template uses low-level HTTP requests to obtain a time-sensitive Bearer Token from the Microsoft Identity Platform before calling the SharePoint REST API. This method ensures maximum security and flexibility, providing a powerful foundation for building advanced data pipelines using the n8n node ecosystem. The workflow is initiated by an n8n trigger, making it ideal for scheduled synchronization tasks.

How it Works

This n8n workflow follows a reliable three-stage process:

  1. Scheduled Activation (The n8n Trigger): The workflow begins via the Schedule Trigger, activating the automation at predefined intervals.

  2. Configuration and Setup: The setTenant n8n node prepares the required tenantid for the authentication call. A vital security note advises against hardcoding sensitive values like clientid and clientsecret within the workflow itself.

  3. Token Generation: The first HTTP Request n8n node, Generate OAuth Token, executes a POST request to the Microsoft endpoint, passing the necessary client credentials and resource URL to receive a Bearer Token. This dynamic token is critical for authorization.

  4. Data Retrieval: The final HTTP Request n8n node, Fetch SharePoint List, utilizes the Bearer Token obtained in the previous step and injects it into the Authorization header. It then queries the specific SharePoint list using the standard SharePoint REST API (/api/web/lists/getbytitle(...)) to successfully fetch the list items.

This entire n8n workflow demonstrates best practices for handling API authentication challenges within the platform.

Installation Guide

To deploy this n8n workflow successfully, follow these steps:

  1. Import the n8n template: Copy the provided JSON and import it directly into your n8n instance.

  2. Configure the setTenant Node: Update the value for tenantid (your Microsoft Azure Active Directory Tenant ID) in the setTenant n8n node.

  3. Configure Generate OAuth Token Node:

Replace {{clientid}} and {{client_secret}} with secure references to your registered application credentials. Ideally, use N8N credentials or environment variables rather than hardcoding.
Update {your-sharepoint-domain} in the resource body parameter.

  1. Configure Fetch SharePoint List Node:

* Update the URL to include your specific SharePoint domain and the correct list title (replace YourListTitle).

  1. Activate the n8n Trigger: Configure the Schedule Trigger to run at your desired frequency (e.g., once daily, every hour).

  2. Activate the n8n workflow: Save and activate the workflow to begin fetching data.

Node Details

Schedule Trigger (n8n trigger): This foundational n8n node dictates when the synchronization process begins, allowing for automatic, unattended execution.
Set (setTenant n8n node): Used to define and pass the SharePoint tenantid securely down the workflow chain, preparing the data needed for authentication.
HTTP Request (Generate OAuth Token): This crucial n8n node handles the client credentials flow. It sends a POST request to the Microsoft token service, providing granttype: clientcredentials, clientid, client_secret, and the target resource to retrieve a valid OAuth token.
HTTP Request (Fetch SharePoint List): This final action n8n node retrieves the data. It dynamically references the Token generated in the previous step and uses it in the Authorization: Bearer header to authenticate the request against the SharePoint REST API endpoint. The request ensures only JSON metadata is returned.
