Who is this best for?

  • Technical Analysts and Legal Teams monitoring Terms of Service updates.

  • Competitor Intelligence groups tracking content changes on public websites.

  • Users who need a reliable, scheduled n8n automation to detect webpage modifications.

  • Developers looking for powerful n8n templates integrating scraping and G Suite.

Overview

This advanced n8n workflow provides a robust, zero-false-positive solution for monitoring external web pages, such as regulatory filings, Terms of Service, or critical policy documents. Instead of relying on simple content comparisons, this n8n template utilizes cryptographic hashing on the extracted content, ensuring even minor text changes are immediately flagged.

The core value of this specific n8n workflow lies in its efficiency: the change detection mechanism, implemented via the Remove Duplicates n8n node, acts as a gatekeeper, ensuring downstream actions (like sending an email or logging to Google Sheets) only fire when a true, verified change in the content hash is detected. This methodology prevents alert fatigue and provides a highly verifiable, permanent log of every documented change saved to Google Drive and Google Sheets.

How it Works

The automation begins with the Schedule Trigger n8n trigger, configured to run at set intervals (e.g., daily). This ensures the monitoring process is fully automated. First, the Variables n8n node defines the target URL for consistency across the n8n workflow. The HTTP Request n8n node then fetches the raw content of the target webpage. Next, the HTML n8n node extracts the specific content section we wish to monitor (using a configured CSS selector). To standardize the input for hashing, the Markdown n8n node converts the content.

The crucial step in this n8n workflow involves the Crypto n8n node, which calculates a unique hash (or fingerprint) of the content. This hash is passed to the Remove Duplicates n8n node (“Only New Hashes”). This clever n8n node compares the current hash against previously seen hashes in prior executions. If the hash is new—meaning the page content has changed since the last run of the n8n workflow—the flow proceeds. If a change is confirmed, the new content is immediately saved as a permanent snapshot via the Google Drive n8n node. Following the snapshot, the Google Sheets n8n node logs the change details and the Drive link, and finally, the Gmail n8n node sends an immediate change alert email notification.

Installation Guide

  1. Import the n8n workflow: Copy the provided JSON data and paste it into your n8n instance using the 'New' -> 'Import from JSON' option.

  2. Set Credentials: Configure the required credentials for Google Sheets, Google Drive, and Gmail. Ensure your Google accounts have the necessary permissions to access and modify the specified document and drive folder.

  3. Customize Target: Open the Variables n8n node and update the url assignment to the website you wish to monitor.

  4. Update Selector: Open the Extract Contents (HTML) n8n node and update the CSS selector (.ct07 in the template) to match the specific content container you want to track on your target website.

  5. Activate: Set the Schedule Trigger n8n trigger to your desired frequency and activate the n8n workflow.

Node Details

Schedule Trigger (n8n trigger): Initiates the entire n8n workflow on a repeating schedule, ensuring continuous monitoring.
Variables (Set n8n node): Stores the target url variable for easy reference and management throughout the n8n workflow. Configured to track https://x.com/en/tos by default.
Fetch Webpage (HTTP Request n8n node): Retrieves the HTML content from the defined URL, configured with a user-agent header.
Extract Contents (HTML n8n node): Parses the received HTML and extracts content based on a specified CSS selector (.ct07), isolating the trackable data.
Get Hash of Contents (Crypto n8n node): Generates a cryptographic hash (SHA256, by default) of the extracted text. This hash serves as a unique fingerprint for content change detection within the n8n workflow.
Only New Hashes (Remove Duplicates n8n node): The core intelligence of this n8n workflow. It uses the calculated hash to determine if the content has changed since the last execution. If the hash is duplicated, the workflow stops; otherwise, it proceeds to the notification stage.
Take a Snapshot (Google Drive n8n node): Creates a backup of the changed content as a Markdown file in Google Drive, linking the file name to the new hash.
Log Record (Google Sheets n8n node): Appends a new row to a designated Google Sheet, recording the URL, new hash, date of change, and a link to the Google Drive snapshot.

  • Notify of Change (Gmail n8n node): Sends a detailed email alert to a specified address (e.g., [email protected]) upon successful detection of a change.
