What is Agent Reader?

Agent Reader acts as the last mile rendering engine for AI workflows, bridging the gap between raw Markdown and professional deliverables. Whether you are building reports, creating presentations, or publishing web-ready content, this tool ensures your AI output looks polished and professional. It is a standout addition to the library of Openclaw Skills, providing seamless conversion capabilities for developers and AI agents alike.

The skill handles complex formatting requirements including sidebar Table of Contents (TOC), syntax highlighting for code blocks, and smart formatting for document exports. By integrating this into your environment, you empower your AI to not just write content, but to design it for the end user.

Agent Reader Use Cases

  • Generating professional PDF or Word reports from AI-generated research.
  • Converting raw Markdown documentation into styled webpages with navigation.
  • Creating image-based slideshows for presentations automatically.
  • Streamlining the delivery of AI output to clients who require specific file formats like .docx.
  • Automating the conversion of local image directories into interactive HTML slideshows.

How Agent Reader Works

  1. The AI agent passes Markdown content or image paths to the Agent Reader toolset.
  2. The engine parses the Markdown, applying selected themes (light or dark) and structural elements like TOCs.
  3. For document exports, it utilizes Puppeteer for high-fidelity PDF rendering or an internal engine for Word generation.
  4. Files are temporarily stored in a side-effect-free directory (/tmp/agent-reader/) for user retrieval.
  5. The agent returns the file path or base64 content to the user based on pre-configured preferences.

Agent Reader Setup

To integrate this into your workflow with Openclaw Skills, add the following to your MCP configuration file:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "agent-reader": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "agent-reader", "mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Ensure you have Node.js installed. Puppeteer will automatically install on its first use for PDF rendering.

Agent Reader Data Schema & Taxonomy

Agent Reader organizes its operations around the following data structures:

Parameter Type Description
content String The raw Markdown text to be processed.
format String Target output format (pdf, docx, or html).
theme String UI style: "light" or "dark".
source_path String Path to original .md file for local image referencing.
pre_export Array List of formats to generate simultaneously (e.g., ["pdf", "docx"]).

All generated files are isolated in the /tmp/agent-reader/ directory to maintain system hygiene.

Agent Reader Advanced Features

  • Multi-format Pre-generation: Generate PDF and Word versions simultaneously during the web rendering process.
  • Headless Browser Rendering: Leverages Puppeteer for pixel-perfect PDF layouts that mirror web styling.
  • Smart Preference Management: Configure and persist user-specific themes and default formats.
  • Sandbox Friendly: Supports a return_content flag to output base64 strings, ideal for Docker or restricted file-system environments.
  • Automatic Image Sequencing: Transform a directory of images into a full-screen slideshow with auto-play and keyboard navigation.
