What is API Gateway?

The API Gateway skill acts as a centralized bridge between AI agents and a vast ecosystem of third-party services. By leveraging Openclaw Skills architecture, it removes the heavy lifting of individual OAuth implementations, allowing developers to call native endpoints for services like Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Salesforce through a single, secure interface.

This skill is powered by Maton.ai, ensuring that while the agent has a unified entry point, security is never compromised. Each service requires explicit user authorization, and access is strictly scoped to the connections authorized by the user. It is the ideal solution for developers building complex Openclaw Skills that need to orchestrate data across multiple SaaS platforms.

API Gateway Use Cases

  • Automating cross-platform workflows between Slack, Jira, and GitHub.
  • Creating AI agents that can read and write data directly to Google Sheets or Airtable.
  • Managing CRM records in HubSpot or Salesforce via natural language commands.
  • Orchestrating calendar events and scheduling across Google Calendar and Outlook.
  • Building unified file management tools for Dropbox, OneDrive, and Box.

How API Gateway Works

  1. The developer configures the MATON_API_KEY to authenticate with the Maton control plane.
  2. A connection is initiated for a specific app (e.g., Slack or Notion) using the control API.
  3. The user authorizes the connection through a secure OAuth flow provided by the generated URL.
  4. The AI agent constructs a request to the gateway using the format: https://gateway.maton.ai/{app}/{native-api-path}.
  5. The gateway automatically identifies the correct credentials and forwards the request to the target provider.
  6. The target API response is passed back through the gateway to the AI agent in its native format.

API Gateway Setup

To get started with this skill, you must set your API key as an environment variable and establish your first connection.

# Set your Maton API Key
export MATON_API_KEY="YOUR_MATON_API_KEY"

# Create a new connection (e.g., for Slack)
curl -X POST https://ctrl.maton.ai/connections \
     -H "Authorization: Bearer $MATON_API_KEY" \
     -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
     -d '{"app": "slack"}'

After running the command, open the returned URL in your browser to complete the OAuth process.

API Gateway Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill utilizes a structured routing system to manage requests across various providers. Below is the mapping logic used within these Openclaw Skills:

Component Description
Gateway Base URL https://gateway.maton.ai/{app}/{path}
Control Base URL https://ctrl.maton.ai/connections
App Name Prefix Identifies the target service (e.g., google-mail, hubspot)
Auth Header Authorization: Bearer $MATON_API_KEY
Connection Header Maton-Connection (Optional: specify a unique connection ID)

API Gateway Advanced Features

  • Multi-account support: Use the Maton-Connection header to target specific accounts when multiple connections exist for the same app.
  • Full HTTP Verb Support: Native support for GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, and DELETE methods across all proxied services.
  • Automatic Token Management: Handles OAuth token refreshing transparently without agent intervention.
  • Custom Header Forwarding: All standard and custom headers (excluding Host and Authorization) are passed directly to the destination API.
  • Metadata Tagging: Ability to filter and manage connections by status and application type via the control plane.
