What is apix?

apix is a specialized command-line interface designed to streamline how developers and AI agents interact with APIs. By storing API documentation in local markdown vaults, it provides a lightning-fast way to browse namespaces and execute endpoints. This tool is particularly useful for Openclaw Skills that need to interact with external services, as it allows for precise endpoint discovery without the overhead of heavy web-based documentation.

It translates complex API structures into a searchable, machine-readable format that is easy for both humans and automated agents to navigate. By keeping documentation local and structured, apix ensures that critical API information is always accessible even in environments with limited web access, making it a foundational component for robust Openclaw Skills.

apix Use Cases

  • Rapidly discovering the correct API route for a specific task within a terminal.
  • Inspecting parameter requirements and schemas without loading full documentation pages to save context.
  • Executing live HTTP requests with automatic path and query parameter mapping.
  • Integrating private or custom OpenAPI specifications into local agent-friendly workflows.

How apix Works

  1. Discovery: The user or agent identifies a needed action and uses search or ls to find the corresponding API namespace.
  2. Inspection: The peek command is used to view a condensed version of the endpoint requirements, including YAML frontmatter and required input fields.
  3. Execution: The call command executes the HTTP request, resolving parameters and authentication automatically based on the stored markdown data.
  4. Integration: For custom integrations, the import command converts standard OpenAPI specs into the local vault format used by Openclaw Skills.

apix Setup

To begin using apix with your Openclaw Skills, verify your installation or install it via Homebrew:

brew tap apix-sh/tap
brew install apix

Alternatively, use the curl installer:

curl -fsSL https://apix.sh/install | sh

Verify the installation by checking the version:

apix --version

apix Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes API information into a structured hierarchy based on local markdown files. Routes follow a specific taxonomy:

Component Description
Namespace The top-level provider or API name (e.g., petstore)
Version The specific API versioning string (e.g., v1)
Path The URL path segments
Method The HTTP verb (GET, POST, etc.)

Example Route: petstore/v1/pets/{petId}/GET.

apix Advanced Features

  • Deep grep capabilities for finding specific keywords across entire API namespaces for faster research.
  • Ambiguity resolution to handle identical routes across different API sources within Openclaw Skills.
  • Support for raw markdown output when piped, ensuring seamless consumption by AI agents.
  • Flexible parameter handling including support for complex JSON request bodies and custom headers via CLI flags.
