What is Bark Notify?

Bark Notify is a highly efficient utility designed to bridge your AI workspace and mobile device. By integrating with the Bark push notification service, it automatically fires notifications to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac when an AI agent completes a task, runs into an error, or requires attention.

This component is an essential part of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, keeping developers informed without constantly monitoring terminal execution. It intelligently aggregates details such as device name, project name, execution status, and task summaries to provide concise, context-rich alerts.

Bark Notify Use Cases

  • Receive real-time push alerts on your iOS devices when long-running Claude or Codex tasks finish.
  • Monitor execution status (success, partial, or failed) remotely while working on other tasks.
  • Track background agent runs across multiple development machines with custom machine identifiers.
  • Stay updated on multiple projects with automatic project name resolution from AGENTS.md.

How Bark Notify Works

  1. Environment Initialization: The execution script reads your unique Bark API key, machine name, and base URL from local environment variables.
  2. Project Name Resolution: The skill attempts to resolve the project name by parsing the frontmatter or plain text config within AGENTS.md, defaulting to the folder name if none is found.
  3. Task Completion Hook: Once an agent finishes executing, the system calls the internal python helper script with relevant metadata (title, status, and summary).
  4. Notification Push: The script formats and transmits a secure HTTPS POST payload to the Bark gateway, instantly delivering the push notification directly to your registered device.

Bark Notify Setup

To integrate Bark Notify with your local environment and Openclaw Skills configuration, follow these steps:

1. Set Environment Variables

Add these entries to your shell configuration file (e.g., ~/.bashrc or ~/.zshrc):

export CODEX_MACHINE_NAME="My-MacBook-Pro"
export CODEX_BARK_KEY="YOUR_BARK_DEVICE_KEY_HERE"
export CODEX_BARK_BASE_URL="https://api.day.app"

2. Configure Your Agent Instruction

In your project's AGENTS.md file, instruct the agent to utilize this capability by adding:

Use skill bark-notify to notify users when each agent run is finished or when any notifications would be sent to users.

Bark Notify Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill relies on specific environment variables and metadata fields to correctly route notifications. Below is the configuration taxonomy:

Field Type Description Example
CODEX_MACHINE_NAME Environment Var The custom label of the device initiating the run. MacBook-Air
CODEX_BARK_KEY Environment Var Your unique Bark application device key. aBcD12345eFgh
CODEX_BARK_BASE_URL Environment Var The API endpoint for the Bark notification service. https://api.day.app
project_name / name YAML Frontmatter Overrides the notification project name field. alpha-api

Notification Payload Arguments

  • --task-title: A brief descriptive action title (3-8 words).
  • --status: Execution status, such as success, failed, partial, or blocked.
  • --summary: A high-level description of results (avoid sending secrets or passwords).
  • --project-name: Optional custom project name overrides.

Bark Notify Advanced Features

  • Dynamic Project Overrides: Automatically scans AGENTS.md for YAML frontmatter (project_name or name) or plain-text markers like Project Name: or 项目名称: to dynamically contextualize alerts.
  • Multi-Device Support: Easily differentiate which physical machine executed the task by configuring the CODEX_MACHINE_NAME variable.
  • Secure Local Execution: Keeps sensitive source code and operational summaries completely private, pushing only user-defined task titles and status variables to the external notification gateway.
  • Platform Versatility: Works seamlessly across both macOS and Linux local runtimes under the Openclaw Skills directory structure.
