What is Braingit?

Braingit is a streamlined automation tool designed for developers and knowledge workers who utilize Markdown-heavy repositories for documentation or personal knowledge management. Its primary purpose is to provide a reliable way to capture deltas in text content without cluttering the git history with irrelevant file changes. By focusing strictly on specific file patterns, it ensures that your workspace history remains clean and content-focused.

This tool is particularly valuable when paired with Openclaw Skills to manage AI-generated documentation or automated note-taking sessions. Braingit handles the staging and committing logic programmatically, making it an ideal component for automated backup routines and version-controlled workspaces where manual git commands would be tedious or prone to error.

Braingit Use Cases

  • Automating the backup of personal Markdown notes and PKM repositories.
  • Maintaining a granular version history for documentation-as-code projects.
  • Creating automated snapshots of AI-generated content within Openclaw Skills workflows.
  • Isolating text-based changes from code or binary assets during frequent commit cycles.

How Braingit Works

  1. The tool initiates a check within the designated repository using the git status command with porcelain output for reliable parsing.
  2. It filters the modified and untracked files based on a configurable pattern, which defaults to all Markdown files.
  3. Only the files matching the pattern are added to the git staging area.
  4. If matching changes are found, it executes a git commit with a specific message provided by the user or the automation script.
  5. The process completes with a clean exit status, ensuring it can be safely used in automated pipelines and Openclaw Skills sequences.

Braingit Setup

To get started with Braingit, ensure you have the scripts available in your local environment. You can run the commit script directly from within your git repository.

# Navigate to your repo and run the snapshot script
./scripts/commit_md_changes.sh "md: snapshot"

You can also define the repository path and file patterns using environment variables:

# Specify a repository path and a custom commit message
BRAINGIT_REPO=/path/to/your/notes ./scripts/commit_md_changes.sh "manual update"

Braingit Data Schema & Taxonomy

Braingit operates directly on the Git version control system. It does not maintain a separate database but relies on environment variables and standard Git conventions.

Configuration Variable Description Default Value
BRAINGIT_REPO The directory path of the git repository to process. Current working directory
BRAINGIT_PATTERN The file glob pattern to include in snapshots. *.md
BRAINGIT_DRY_RUN Set to 1 to simulate the process without committing. 0

Braingit Advanced Features

  • Support for custom file patterns via BRAINGIT_PATTERN to snapshot non-markdown files like JSON or YAML.
  • Dry-run capability for testing automation logic without modifying the actual repository state.
  • Seamless integration with cron jobs for periodic, unattended documentation backups.
  • Protocol-based design optimized for headless execution within Openclaw Skills environments.
